i do have a question for those in the know out there. i really want to add some gas struts. this thing is heavy when empty, i cant imagine what it would be with gear in the box. what should i look for in a strut (do they have specs, etc) and what is the best way to mount them(close to the hinge, close to the latch, etc)?

thanks for your help!

I like your approach with the "bare bones" design of it. It is simple, functional and clean. As shown with your lid modification the original form can evolve. Also shows that you've got some good fab skills!

thanks jim! long time no see (we offroaded a LONG time ago up at cleghorn, back in nov 06!) like to see ya on the trail soon!

idea is to keep it as versital as possible. 6 bolts removes the lid, allowing the trailer to be used for dump duty or carring any number of items.

I realize this thread is super old, but here's a great resource for designing a gas spring lifting system:

http://www.bansbach.de/com/gasfedern/online-calculator.html

You can use their calculator to design your system using their rules of thumb and rough measurements. You could probably find some junkyard rear liftgate, hood, or trunk gas springs that would be pretty decent for the task.
