Seeking guidance on purchase of 2006+ 4Runner...

Well, as much as it pains me to say this, I am looking at retiring my beloved Isuzu Trooper. Just too many reliability issues (not to mention support) to keep it and be confident. It's treated me well, though.

I am looking at purchasing a 2006 (or newer) 4Runner SR5. Obviously it will be a 4WD, but I'll admit to going batty trying to figure out the different packages and such.

So, my questions are as follows:

1) How can I verify that the truck has a locking rear differential? Is it that switch with the four wheels and an X through the driveshaft? Is there a label code I should be looking for?

2) Is there a decent aftermarket set of skidplates that can be installed on the truck? I know JAOS makes a front skid plate, but I've always considered them a bit too bling for me. Anyone else? What about for the gas tank, etc?

Any other guidance you deem useful will be appreciated. Thanks! :smiley_drive:

2006+ don't have a rear locker (with the exception of the 2010 Trail Edition). All 4x4 4runners have a center locking differential for the torsen differential, so it may be a bit confusing. Budbuilt makes skid plates and several people have added arb lockers. Check toyota120.com for more model specific questions, there is a ton of information over there.
