SEMA 2018

Because my Jeep was in the show this year I didn't get as much time to explore the rest of the show as I usually do, but I'll post a few photos of things I found interesting this year.

I've known Tony Quesada, the Director of Engineering at Cliffride, for several years. He's done some great things with fiberglass over the past few years and this year Cliffride was showing two new camper designs.

This one's on a JLU but Tony tells me they're doing a JKU version as well.

I've been thinking of adding solar charging to my Trail Kitchen implementation; here's one idea I spotted outside the South Hall.

Not sure if it's permanently mounted or if it's put up there when they make camp, I'll have to go back today to see if I can tell. Wouldn't bug plsatter reduce output if it's always up there?

Not only would the splatter reduce output but would drastically shorten the usable life span of the panel. Each scratch from bugs, dust, branches etc would permanently damage the panel reducing output

It is not permanently mounted up there Jeff. I just went to their IG page and looked at their photos. It is the Jeep for 5.11 Tactical. The drivers side rear hardtop window it appears has also been taken out and storage with a panel opening has been added. It opens up though and not down like I think it should. Didnt know if you caught that or not.

When I walked by that Jeep this morning early, the solar panel wasn't in place. Also the last time I went past I went by the passenger side and didn't notice the cargo hatch on the driver's side so I checked it out today.

I've been seriously considering doing the final work to turn my cargo hatch prototype into a commercial product, there's a company that's expressed some interest in it and I've also been interested in the idea for a long time.

SEMA is finally over an now that I've endured the two-hour traffic jam getting the Jeep out of the show all and away from the convention center area it's a daily driver again instead of a show car. Tomorrow morning early I begin the drive from Las Vegas to Asheville, NC for the Overland East Show, where MORryde will be borrowing it again. Anyone going to that event?

All four days of the show by far the most popular item in the MORryde booth was the Safari Cab hardtop, so popular that I ended up having at least 30 minutes of conversation with them when they asked if it would be a product they could market (I explained why that wouldn't be a good idea). I was surprised there was so much interest in the top.

Related to that, a company approached me about the barn door, they are interested in just that one component. They're very competent to handle the manufacturing and marketing of it, and I liked the founder of the company a lot, so if they want to move forward I almost certainly will.

The Trail Kitchen was also clearly a hit, not only with the journalists that voted two awards for it, but with show attendees in general. There were lots of good leads for MORryde to follow up on, including an overlanding vehicle company that expressed interest in including it in the camping/overland vehicles they build and also interest by a company in the fridge market interested in possibly private-labeling some of the components, so the MORryde guys are very happy. They say it's the best SEMA Show they've ever had.

And finally, also very popular were the prototype custom-fitted leather storage bags that I had in the Jeep; two people from that startup company were at the show taking input and feedback and they're very excited about launching the bags and other ideas they picked up at the show. They'll also be at Overland East with me so if anyone's interested in seeing what they've done and giving some input and feedback please stop by.
