Series LR PAS conversion

Hi folks. You lot seem to be the most experienced in fitting non-Defender PAS systems to older Land Rovers, so I'm after some tips, please.

What I intend is to use Defender steering column and intermediate link (the one with the UJs), attached to a P38 steering box. This attaches to the outside face of the chassis, avoiding the need to relocate the front cross member.

The P38 PAS box attaches through four bolt holes evenly spaced in pairs either side of the shaft, and these bolt holes are spread far enough apart that they sit above and below the chassis rail on an 88". I'm hoping that the chassis profile in that area on the 109 is similar, though I'm not sure. If the bolt holes are above and below the rail, then I plan to weld bolt tubes to the top and bottom of the chassis section similar to those for the rear dampers or the JATE ring and panhard rod bracket bolts on the coil sprung models. I'll use reinforcing gussets, just like in those examples.

Do you think this will be strong enough, or will it need additional stiffening/spreader plates on the sides of the chassis rails?

Hi Nick,

I was looking for a thread on something when I stumbled across your unanswered thread.

And as so happen to be, I've got some pictures of someone from the SIIclub(forum) who has fitted a P38 box to a SII. He ordered a brand new chassis, tagwelded his stuff to it to fit the box, sent it back to that company that build the chassis. They Tigwelded it all in place and had it galvanised.

Looks really neat.

Hope it is still of use ;)
