Short Travel Video - need storyboard suggestions!

I have a new Canon 7D that shoots video, but I'm completely inexperienced in how to make video's. I have a small camping trip coming up this weekend where I want to experiment with video, so that my next trip (Mojave Trail) will be much more effectively captured on silicone.

My trip this weekend is to an interesting volcanic landmark, and I'm bringing a handful of kids age 9 to 12. I've got a fun little tune in mind to use as a sound track, and I have a few ideas of what I want to shoot and edit/sync to the music, but I still have big wide open gaps in my storyboard. I'm just not used to thinking this way, and I could really use your help!

Music: "Jungle Drum" by Emiliana Torrini
Here is a fun and beautiful video about Iceland made with this song as the featured soundtrack and theme: http://vimeo.com/12236680

Limitations:
  • We are traveling to the campsite at night, so I don't envision a lot of filming on that first part of the trip. Similarly, due to work schedules, I will packing the vehicle at night as well, probably after the kids are all in bed.
  • I have access to several 2GB cards, and one 4GB cards, so not sure about big long shoot for fast forwarding in rapid motion.
  • I have no clue how to due timelapse stuff, so that's out for now.
  • I have iMovie on Mac, and/or Adobe Premier Elements 9 for PC to create videos. I have never used either, so there might be a skill set limitation in editing....

Ideas:
  • While a little long, I think this video is pretty creative with their pre-planned lip-synching to the song. I plan to do something like this for the main chorus of the Jungle Drum song: http://vimeo.com/3792143
  • The kids have agreed to do a funky dance at various times and locations to the song, for editing in at the appropriate time.

I'm wide open to suggestions!

Play the song in your head or in the car and visualize what type of images/pace goes well with a particular part of the song, and then shoot that image.

You need more memory. I would go out and buy one or two 16GB cards for sure... You'll run out of memory and be mad at yourself for missing the moment.

it sounds like the song's beat is constant throughout, so have the kids dance to any part of the song and you'll be able to edit that footage into the video wherever you want.

From your DV link, I also found Scott Gold's Peru video.. I think this is a good example to follow.. just shoot a bunch of random footage, and then splice in videos of the kids dancing to the song.. It'll work out great! Also play around with out of focus shots - not every shoot needs to be in sharp focus.

I've seen that video before. He and his girlfriend Leah make great art and look to have a great time doing it. I checked out her blog a while back too. What a cool lady. I will be getting bigger cards in time for the next big trip, just don't have the opportunity right now before this little trip. I'm just trying to experiment for this one.
