Should I buy this K20?

Looking for a weekend camper/mild trail rig. Found a 1970 K20 sm465 trans, stepside. Owner swapped a 454 out of a 90s suburban into it. Transmission pops out under power in 3rd gear only at like 3500rpm. Owner is interested in trading for my 2006 Ducati Monster S2R1000. How hard is solving the issue with the sm465? I’ve heard they’re an amazing trans and really common.

The 465 is extremely common. GM used it up to 1991. Pretty simple to work on. Only main downfall is horrible gear splits. Oh and a dump truck sized shift pattern. Looks like a fairly solid truck.

Yep. I'd paint it outlaw black and wheel the heck out of it. GM stopped making good trucks when I was born. That ride's older than me.

Rebuilding that transmission should be like a vacation for a trans shop these days.

What condition is the bike in?

I’d give it a 9/10 honestly. Couple of chips or scuffs. It’s going to need a $1200 valve service in 3,000 miles. New tires. Annual service is about due as well. LED headlight, termi exhaust, LED tail chop, bar end mirrors. 12 years old now. ~90 lb/ft of torque and 420lbs wet.

I'd keep that bike. People are cleaning up old monsters cafe-like. It's the next big thing.
