Shower enclosures...

Hi Guys:

We had some success with the FP Rain Flies and I started thinking aqbout shower enclosures. Here's what I am working with:

iphone%20pix%20224-XL.jpg

Basically it is a restaurant bus pan with a vinyl curtain hung above it (and snapped into it) that zips up the side. I use a Solar Shower bag (and usually heat water and pour it in the bag. But any shower mechanism would do.

I have it hung from the tailgate in the photos, but it can also hang from the crank handle to raise/lower the FP. I think it can also be rigged up to hang inside the FP. Still working that out.

When not in use the bus pan can be used for dishes and the curtain folds down and stores in the pan...which has a lid.

So, just like the FP Rain Sheet, I am looking to see who might be interested in the shower enclosure. Price will probably be about $75 or $80.

Anybody want one?

Cool idea!

On a similar note, can you guys make up an enclosure for a Fiamma F35 6ft awning (similar to what you made for Shruk)?

Gray with velcro tabs along the top to attach it to the bars and with a door or velcro'd slit for access?

You can PM me if you want, I'm highly interested in one in gray.

With the price of a good privy shelter so cheap I don't know how many of those you would sell... I got this on sale for $59 last summer....

You may be right. I have thought about one of those, but did not want a tent to set/strike. That's the reason I like the FP so much. Easy up/down. How do you like it? The reviews on Cabelas are good. But the enclosure is $90 now.

As was the case with the FP Fly, we have to gauge interest; then we'll build a few and have a good idea on cost. May be able to sell them for less.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Seems there are lots of places to buy a cheap shower curtain, army surplus has them for 4.99. Some para cord can go through the existing holes in several ways and tie up to just about anything.

Years ago, I cut up a Hula-Hoop and put dowels inside the pipe so it could be packed in a bag in 4 sections and reassembled. Used standard shower curtain with the plastic hooks. Tie a cord in three spots on the large hoop and hang it. I guess you could stand in a tupperware pan or bucket. So, in less than an hour and about 20 bucks, you'd have a shower enclosure.

As a business: In the initial development of any product line, your product needs to be compared to what's on the market and pricing of the alternative. The function of your product also need to be considered against what the public might do to solve the same need. While not everyone is a DIYer, most who go camping will probably have some mechanical ablities, so you will probably be competing with various alternatives commonly employed.

I would think that if you could beat a twenty dollar alternative that served the same function, the odds of success in selling a similar product would be feasible. Good luck.

TACODOC,

I worked directly with the manufacturer, SLO Sail and Canvas, for my awning walls, not through billybee. They are friends but bb doesn't work there. I ended up sending the exact measurements of what I wanted. They sent me a quote and I placed the order. Shoot me your email and I can send you copies of what I sent them. It's worked very well.

I love that privy shelter. Easy to set up and good quality parts and material. I've never staked it down but never had high winds the few times I've taken it camping. Well worth the $90 in my opinion. I just got lucky and caught it on sale with an additional 10% off coupon.

Good luck with your project. I love the ingenuity of it. DIY rules... ;)

Apart from XPcamper and Earthroamer's XV-JP, has anyone built or seen an "aisle" shower setup in a pop-up truck camper? Among my options for a build, is a pop-up truck camper and am thinking of incorporating this idea. Recess the shower pan at the camper's entry and affix the curtain track to the ceiling. Depending on track design, curtain could also create privacy for use of the porta potti/cassette toilet. Imagine this would be a nice addition to Hallmark's K2 or a Coyote RV/Phoenix Pop-up.

Am I missing a reason why this isn't possible?

Here are a few pictures of the basic inside shower we install on our 9.0' foot Keystone Model pop-up truck campers.

The shower curtain hangs from the inside roof, the shower pan lays on the floor and connects to a small drain on the camper floor (so the shower water can drain outside).

The outside water can run on to the ground, or you can hook up a grey water bag or bucket to catch the drain water as needed.

Not fancy, but it seems to work OK.

Hope this helps with a visual.

Happy Camping !

Thanks for those photos, Stan. I was wondering how that worked in the FWC.

The first ones we were using were a made from a custom water tank that we cut in half.

Nothing fancy. Simple. We made the drian for it.

You could probably find something similar at Home Depot or Lowes.

I know they make simple plastic drain pans for washing machines.

(you set it on the floor and the washing machice sits on top of it to catch any possible spills).

Maybe something like this ...

Although this shower is meant for a small bathroom in an apartment this is an interesting French solution as the whole shower, including the shower pan, quickly folds-up against the wall, but still captures all the drips while drying.

http://www.supiot.fr/presentation.php

Could add a vertical hinge at the wall so the whole thing swings like a door.

I do like the FWC recessed shower pan idea but not wet shower curtains. Maybe dealing with them is not as bad as I imagine.

My thoughts would be that the typical camper with drains for shower pan, bathroom sink and kitchen sink would be best if it were made so just one drain/sink area that served all three functions. To do that you'd probably have to go with a raised sit-down shower with your feet in a large deeper sink (similar to a standing utility sink). The counter area would drain to the sink but this is also where you would sit for a shower. Once you have that down the surround shouldn't be a big deal.
