Shower / hot water system

Has anyone set a shower / hot water system up on a TJ? I know it's been done on some other vehicles, but I was wondering about TJ specific. Thank you in advance.

X2. I believe there is a poll on here and zodi extreme seemed to be the most chosen by expo members...

One of the guys in Bay State Jeepers has a permanent setup in his LJ. He used a heat exchanger (not sure if it was a plate type or not) and a pump. He used a standard mixing valve setup for a utility sink (also mounted under the hood) that feeds a hose and showerhead. I'll see if I can find the pictures he posted of it during his build up.

I've shipped out the Helton kits to dozens of Jeep owners, TJ's, JK's, XJ's, you name it. I've not installed one personally in a TJ but it can't be any more difficult than the other installs... hour or less.

Looks like when the site was upgraded earlier this year the archives were not transferred over.

effeminately if you want a plug-n-play system go with the helton kit from cruiseroutfit - tried and true.

if you want to source everything yourself, you may get some ideas from my install here: http://offroadpassport.com/forum/showthread.php?t=754
i'm using a plate style heat exchanger, RV water pump, thermostatic mixer, and blah blah blah

EDIT - the ORP site is up and down alot lately, we're upgrading hosts soon - for now if you can't get to above link, i have an overview here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...-Grand-Cherokee-(2003-WJ)?p=877717#post877717

Great thread. One question---how cold will your anti-scald valve allow the water to get? If it will turn the hot side off altogether, you could probably get away with one output. Just something I am thinking of as I shamelessly steal your design.

'Nother question for you Kristoffer, how long have you had the Shurflo mounted under the hood? I've got pretty much the same set up sans the the H/E. I want to get a flat plat H/E and mount it under hood in my XJ along with the pump but I'm a bit worried about the effects of the heat on the pump...

BTW you Rig rocks!

you can only turn down the anti-scald only so far, can't remember what temp (lookup a data sheet for whatever model you find a good price on), but not cold. also the thing really isn't meant to be used like a normal faucet handle - it's designed to be set once and left alone forever pretty much, so i don't think it's good idea to fiddle with alot. instead of like 4 turns from min to max, there's a ton of adjustment, like 20 turns. i had planned to just use it mainly to dial in the right temp and then maybe make some minor adjustments as the seasons change, or between users, but not major changes.

thanks! i wouldn't worry about heat too much. mine's not been installed nearly long enough to call it long-term tested yet though.

i'm more worried about dust and water than anything. dust i can't help much. it's mounted high enough that water shouldn't be there often except when i wash it, and so i just try to be careful.

i also have a large electric compressor mounted under the hood and it's holding up so far. previously though i had dual MV-50 compressors there and they died within 9 months - i'm hoping the new larger compressor is better quality and can handle it better.

overall if you can mount your pump inside without having to run lots of extra hose, then do so, otherwise just mount it high in the engine bay i think.

good luck!

Thanks! I've got the same Puma compressor mounted in the rear quarter with one of my rock rails as an air tank. Cuppla pics here:

While I've got you ear, where did you source you heat exchanger?

search "10 plate heat exchanger" on ebay, there is a guy selling them with a variety of different npt/male/female/ribbed/etc connectors for $45 and free shipping. Amazon has them too for the same price.

10 plate turned out to be way plenty for my engine, smaller engines that run cooler or flow less coolant may want a 15 or 20 plate. also, some people expressed concerns about the longevity of a plate style within a harsh (vibration) environment, i've not had my long enough to know if this is a real concern or not, but i did take the precaution to mount it with a little bit of rubber buffer.
