Size matter? Western Washington Worry

I am a big fan of full size trucks but have to wonder being in Western Washington where the trees and brush take over the roads and trails. Is it a mistake to go full size? All my previous off roaders have been Toyota's.
Input welcome.

As much as I wanted to get a smaller truck, I just cant get comfortable in them. For me it wasn't a big issue, I'd rather get out and walk anyways at a trailhead.

Not necessarily a "mistake", but it could make things more difficult (or fun depending on your mindset) for you. You can't care too much about the condition of the paint along the sides (pin striping like crazy- my Explorer is heavily pin stripped). And those 33" tires that were plenty for your Toyota will not quite cut it on a longer wheelbase full-size.

I wouldn't mind a smaller truck, but I need the space for the family. And admittantly, it's quite a bit more comfortable than a midsize. If the trails get too tight, I'll break out the Rzr.

Fullsize vs small rigs definitely depends on mindset. I Jeeped the area trail systems, repeatedly for almost ten years. It's repetitive and boring. I now choose fullsize comfort, and amenities. Fire roads can get you a long way.

Not necessarily Western Washington but I have done the Washington BDR 3 times with a full size truck and was great. A little pinstriping through the jungle but don't have to worry about that after the fires last year. A lot of the roads in the Northwest where built for log trucks so there is a lot out there to explore.

My truck is huge:Wow1:with the big canopy on the back. I put the pedal to the metal and push my way through...:)

I have a CC LWB diesel F-350 to haul my Hallmark pop up camper.
For us it is just the right size for the extended trips we have planned.

Interestingly we just came back from Expo East and the range of sizes of the various rigs was amazing. Everything from taco's up to tandem rigs that must have weighed north of 25,000 pounds!

Go with what works best for you and don't worry about what other people do..

It really depends on what you want to use the truck for. I had a 1993 Toyota SR5 and used it extensively on the narrow National Forest roads of the Colorado Rockies and was oh so glad I had a narrow vehicle with a shorter wheel base for the ability to turn it around in tight places and negotiate narrow roads with steep drop-offs. If you don't anticipate finding yourself in such places, full size is fine. In fact, I have a Silverado now as I spend far more time on wider roads, under less intense conditions.

Thanks for the food for thought. Its been 20 years since I crossed Naches Trail with my all stock 86 4Runner. I have heard its not as easy as it was. I have had fun with my straight axle Toyota's that were lifted and boy did they suck on the road. :)

I choose to go smaller simply because i dont need the capabilities of a full size right now.

I have a 2001 ranger and its more than big enough for my girlfriend and myself to do extended camping trips in, especially if we bring our little off road trailer.

My one complaint was lack of room for my families dog (30lbs wheaton terrior) but i just swapped the bucket seats for a 60/40 bench seat and that solved that problem.

My next truck will either be the new ranger when they bring it back to North America or it will be an f150. All depends on what i need at the time.

Either way whichever route you go im sure you will be satisfied!

I'm very interested to see what the new Ranger will be capable of. Several videos I've seen on youtube are very impressive. A small ecoboost motor giving it 30mpg wouldn't be out of the question. It'll be a contender for sure.
