Hello everyone.
I have used the website for a ton of great info, so I guess it's my time to give back.
Today I picked up my first camper
I got a 1995 skamper 060s pop up truck camper.
It fit perfectly into my GMC Canyon.
Here is my first pic.
I have it straped with rachet straps temporarily.
I just wanted to get it back to my place ASAP.

I will keep everyone posted with my progress of my adventures and any mods I have planned.
I will post some pics of the inside as soon as I get a chance to work on my new toy.

Building a box

image.jpgSo my first project was to get this skamper off of my truck so I can get back to work.
I built a camper stand and put 4 casters on it so I can move it around the parking lot at work as need be.
I used 4 casters that were sitting around the ware house and wood that was just laying out back.
Seems to be holding up.
Also. I added a step up today- to make getting in and out much easier.
Very strong.

Question - do you think I should still strap the camper down to the stand just in case.
Or is that over kill .
Like I would like to sleep in the camper a few nights on the stand , to get a feel for what nights will be like.

Keys

So today I tackled the door.
I had no keys for the door,
So I removed the locking mec.
And then got a lock smith to make 2 keys for the
Lock.
20 bucks later I have a latch and deadbolt.

Personally, I'm all about overkill, so I would strap down the camper to the dolly, especially while moving it. Build is looking good so far!!

I keep mine in the garage on a dolly and have never had any tipping problems. Never have strapped it down and been up on the bed several times. But it's up to you, whatever makes you comfortable.

Thanks for the heads up guys.
I will add another cross member , and will strap down when moving the card around...

Quick question, Nivekd or who ever - how do you get your camper so low to the ground...
i wanted to build my camper stand low to the ground , but my jack stands did not allow for that, and for me to get that low.
So my question how do you get it so low, without a fork lift or something.

Thanks

While tearing apart my camper I tossed a perch underneath it. Really stable and I'll cannibalize it when I make my rolling platform. I've been up in the bed and there has been zero moment even though I'm not tied down. I even jumped around to see if I was setting myself up for failure. I will make tie downs on my mobile perch but I'll be pulling it with an atv over my yard with pneumatic tires. Probably more of a placebo since if the 1000# camper decides to tip, the 150# platform will just go with it...can't hurt to tie it down and you won't be able to misplace tie downs :)

Removed the water tank

So today I removed the water holding tank.
My plans are to do winter camping this year so I just wanted to remove the tank so I don't the make the mistake of filling it and letting the water freeze the lines.
Also the water lines and tank were not very clean so I figured I would take it all out anyways and replace in the spring.
The tank on the inside was very clean so I will keep that and replace everything else.

Now I have lots of extra storage room, and access to the power converter.
So now I can start messing with the electronics like throwing in a battery and charger for the lights and heater fan.

water tank/battery compartment

Looks like have enough room for 2 batteries on the right side of the water tank. Close to the converter, check the converter maybe it's has a battery charger built in?. watch out for the copper LP line.

I don't leave my jacks on the camper when mounted to the truck (too much weight). I have a set of heavy duty jacks that I use and they go all the way to the ground.

Leak test

So I popped up the top today and got the hose going to do a leak test.
Things held up great.
No obviouse leaks. And only one rip in the screen.
Temp fix will be clear gorilla tape. - eventually replace the screen window.

Really happy about that.

That's a cool jack system.
Thanks for the info.
Is that an RV specific jack or is that something you bought and built to work with your camper.

Just picked up my 89 060S Saturday! I'll be following this thread closely. Won't start my rebuild till this winter. I have a lot to learn. First camper!

Inside Clean Up

Just doing a little clean up on the inside. Cleaning up the grime on the floors and a little vacuuming of the dust.
Really happy with how she is cleaning up.
So far there are no broken doors or door pulls that need to be changed
Curtains and apulstury are a bit dated but i will not be changing that any time soon.

The sink and burners are going to be looked at and cleaned next.
