House batteries were getting low.... They don't like the cold. Alternators were doing 70-90 amps at idle while it warmed up.

Idled down without any drama.

are you using a fuel additive for winter anti-gelling? mine has been like this the last couple years too actually - seems odd. wondering either its that, or just something up with our fuel these days. I dont ever remember diesel filters being this dirty 5 years ago.

I use power service white bottle. But not in awhile since it's been summer??

Interesting. I usually get a full year out of my fuel filter and run amsoil cold flow in the winter, with #1 or a 50/50 mix. Its been the same darkness as yours the last 3 years. I wouldnt be surprised if our fuel is casing this coloring. Seems like fuels changes along with engines and emissions stuff. Maybe some sort of new additive to make new engines cleaner? Although you would think the filter would be cleaner too....

I was looking at my paint pen under the hood, may have been 20k....

Diesel contains small amounts of long molecules called asphaltenes. These clump together and turn filters black. however a large amount of sludge like buildup, points to liquid water either in the fuel tank or at the filling station. At the liquid water to fuel interface microbes can grow and the resulting biological goo ends up in the filter.

I have a pair of 4 and 10 micron spin on filters with approximately 60,000 miles on them. I need to cut them open and see what they look like. Should be interesting.

Yes, I am not leaning towards asphaltines. (the oil filter is in that bag too, the black goo is oil) maybe algea, maybe just dirt and longer filter interval

Figure it out yet? I ws thinking if it was algea (my filter is the same, but I change yearly) wouldn't you see performance changes? For me anyway, performance is the same. Thus far anyway.

Haven't pulled it apart again yet.. I'm thinking it may have just been long service interval?

Wow I have not kept up with this thread! Warning, giant wall of update incoming.... Orange is my current thoughts.

Spent a week in the truck, its nice. One issue, it seems to be slamming into 1st gear on decel...... Just a real hard shift. Any ideas? Not every time, but its doing it a bit now.... Talked to a couple techs, it seems its Ford's "Coast feature"

Nice thing about 4x4, it pulled right out, everyone else was shoveling out in front of their rigs :D

Shoveling the roof sucks.... And I need to figure out a ladder. If anyone has any slick ideas let me know.

sealed the roof lights..... Hopefully RTV works there. I had it on hand and it wasn't raining.... Dropping the headliner is dumb. Still have to get that all back together.

so we had lunch and went home. I did shovel a bit in front of the truck, but 4x4 worked and we pulled out with zero drama. Still need to figure a roof ladder out :D

Well I tried to add a battery heat mat. Supposedly had a Tstat built into it. I bench tested and I thought it got warm, but didn't do ******** once installed. I will pull it out and mess with it.... I did cut it down in size and nicked a lead inside. But it seemed to test out just fine (still had continuity) It does work... Just had to get colder :)

Confirmed 4x4 does work.... But the tires just spin on icy slop ? LSD does not. Maxtrax are awesome. Front locker would help too if I can get LSD working.

If you want to heat your batteries, I suggest insulation them. 1/2" foam is the minimum I think. Otherwise that 65W of heat will get lost to the atmosphere quickly. Another option is a fiber blanket. Thinsulate or similar works fine. Just don't put anything flammable within about 2" of the terminals, as a poor connection could cause a fire.

Also note those batteries are dense. It takes hours to change temp if they are allowed to get cold before turning the heater on.
