Slide out cargo trays

Okay after buying the new truck I need to set it up the way I want it but the budget it not huge.

Has anyone here built a roll out cargo bed or have pictures of one they own. I have some ideas in my head but having never seen one in person I don't want to get it all build and find out after it won't work as planned.

I was thinking about something like this.

Or this.

There are many brands but I just have never seen one up close nor are there any decent pics on the net.

I have a canopy coming which ate all the budget I had from selling my last truck.

A guy that I work with every once in awhile, we are both sub's that work for the same builder, that has a bedslide it is great. He loves it, it locks a certain spots to stay extended. He puts a lot more weight on it then is recommended, ity has held up very well.

I am in the same boat as you, I just ordered a topper for my truck and don't want to drop another $800 on a slide, so I am going to build one for my truck. I bought two sets of slides (500 lb rating) 1 36" and 1 34" to make the bed slide just under 6'.I am a cabinetmaker so I got the slides for 40% off, around $230 for both sets. I will figure it out after I get the topper on. My plan is to put drawers on the bottom and the slide on top of the drawer setup. It will serve a double purpose for me,it will hold tools during the week and camping equipment on the weekends.

I wish they were $800 then I might bite the bullet and just buy one. Up here in Canada all the vendors for these I have called charge a minimum of $1500.

Heading up threw the rockies for about a week this summer but I hope to make it south into utah for winter.

I need to find out what this truck is capable of and how well it works, also what needs more attention.

One option to consider is to only get the tool boxes on the drivers side. You cant see out that side when backing anyways, so it doesnt block your view.

We opted for the tool boxes on the drivers side like in the photo above, but on the passenger side, we just have a full length door that swings open so I can get to the stuff at the front of the truck bed very easily.

I would love the slide, as I'd build a platform that went above it and then stuff could be stored under there and kept out of sight and secured.

View from the back as to how we have everything configured. Two 6 gallon diesel cans on the left. Tool box. Honda 2000iu generator incase we hit a length of time that the solar panels or wind turbine cant produce power. Then the box on the right holds a Weber grill and the propane tank.

That box has a lid on it, but not in this photo. I snapped this while building it.

In front of the box holds a 35gallon fresh water transfer tank so once we've got the basecamp set up (Camper) we can just take the truck into town to get more fresh water to refil the tank when needed.

In front of this stuff, there is empty space that holds a few Rubbermade plastic boxes that hold various gear we dont use everyday, but need with us since we're normally traveling and living on the road fulltime, but the side winddoor really helps in accessing them. This is what a person who has a house would consider their garage...LOL

Like I said, If I could afford it, I'd put in a bed slide for everything and have a shelf built that was level with the bottom of the winddoor to act as a platform. Everything below would be secured during rough conditions, and looking in the windows, you wouldnt see anything and could have more storage, or a sleeping platform if needed.

We have the Camping Lab RTT, so it would just become extra storage

Your plan for a platform is exactly what I was thinking about when I was thinking of the slide.

I also want the roof top tent but I figured I would hace to wait for a bit. Most of my gear will fit in the side bins but the heavy items will be it in the bed.

I was also planning to use the slide out as a table with an awning off the back of the canopy.

We think alike Sapper

After a few times of camping with the tent over the cab, but cooking out of the back of the truck, we both realized it would be better to move it to the back

This is how it sits now. We're also looking to get a Kanz Field Kitchen to put on the back maybe where I used to have the Grill.

This way the kitchen area is covered and we're killing two birds with one stone rather than having to buy an awning

Sweet truck and setup by the way. I forgot to mention it the first time.

Those kitchen units are sweet but I like my Coleman stove. I got used to using them and still do use them in the Military. I like the readt supply of parts I have access to and that they are very easy to field repair.

If those units were all metal and not wooden I would be a but more inclined. I know in some of my previous travels crossing boarders with wood was a huge hassle.

With the roof top tent on the back behind the axle do you find that the truck bounces more?

The tent only weighs a few hundred pounds, so it doesnt change the ride of the truck in the least. No different than having some guy sitting in the bed.

But it did make a huge difference in wind buffering by moving it back over the bed. When we had it on top of the cab, it would catch the wind coming up and off the windshield and it seemed like it was really a sail up there.

Now the wind coming off the windshield tends to throw it up and over the tent, so not nearly as much wind resistance

I'm looking to do a similar thing. I've been looking for HD full extension slides but can't seem to find any. Don't want a standard bed slid - want to build my own.

Good luck,
Mark

I had a slide out drawer made for my tacoma using steal L and rollers from a garage door. You could probably take the same idea and made a bed slide. Here are some pics. I ended up selling the set up because i wanted more headroom for sleeping.

The only slides that our supplier could get was 500# rating and they went up in price signifigantly as size went up ($109 for 34", $370 for 60").
