Slooooow 40 build

Well it's been a little over a year now and my 40 is up on blocks awaiting a lift and some new wheels and tires. My 80 is my DD so hence the slow build as I have more time and $$.

A little back gound on my rig - I was looking for a clean no rust 40 and stumbled across this truck not too far from me in Yuma, Az. After a few e-mails and photos a friend and I hopped in the truck and headed down to good old Yuma. The 40 is a 1978 and is originally from Bolivia so you will see some differences from most US spec trucks, I also posted pictures (Bolivian beauty) when I first got the rig. Original color is the Olive but has been painted beige, honestly I would have been fine with either!

Done so far:
Coolant flush
12v outlet
extended brake lines
new slave & brake cyl.
new dif and brake fluid
Line X rear tub
took out fold up seats and installed a CCOT bench seat for my girls ;)
Expo sticker!!

Coming up:
4" lift
33x10.5 MT's
60 series wheels painted white
re-hab OEM winch

Some pics:

Good job so far, keep at it! We need more 40's here on ExPo. FWIW, I'm running 33x10.5 mud tires on stock rims on a 3" lift and like the combo real well. Handles well, and the rubber overdrive is nice on the highway.

Looking good! You want to sell your old front seats? I need some for my '73.

I'm also going with 60 series skinnies.

What cage is that?

Hey Dave,
The truck came with the Montero seats and that is the only set I have. The cage appears to be a custom, I am going to turn it into a full cage next year sometime.

Thanks 1911, your rig is actually an inspiration! What lift are you running?

Thats a clean FJ40!

What rear seat is that? Is there any markings on it? I am putting in a rear seat for my kiddo's and dropping the rear jump seats. I am looking at the Trailmax II from Bestop. Full cage this winter.

Rig looks great. What are your plans for it? What do you want to use it for?

The leather on the roll bar is awesome! I dig it.

Hey Drew, Thanks for the comments!
The rear seat is a Bestop, the one from CCOT that already has most holes lined up, I had to drill for seat belt/rear hook set up, 1 banana job for sure.

My plans are to get it set up fro some mild wheeling as my 80 is my heavy duty rig. I want to get the top off and enjoy some of our great trails as a family. The motor only has 8K miles from a recent full rebuils so it runs very strong and is a blast to drive, brings a smile to my face every time I get in!

OK, I am finally done with the lift, re-finishing wheels and tires! I ended up going with the Hell Creek lift after many good reviews and I am extremely happy with the way it turned out. My original plan was to go with Mojave teflon wheels but I really like the OEM look so I took 5 - 60 series chrome wheels and sanded and painted them Cygnus white. For tires I went with the 33"x10.5" BFG KM2's as I really like the look and they seem to be getting great reviews. A few after shots!IMG_1274.JPGIMG_1275.JPGIMG_1273.JPGIMG_1277.JPGIMG_1269.JPG

Looks great!

Is that a Toyota (Denso) upright winch on it? Those are few and far between in the States.

Indeed it is! The truck is from Bolivia and came with the winch, when I asked the previous owner what it was (I was looking at a small picture) he said "i don't know, not a toyota one." I have been trying to find out more about them but I cannot find much.

Bolivia you say? No wonder that thing has a fancy roll cage ;)

Very nice looking 40, makes me want to get work on mine, and then move somewhere warmer and drier.
