Check out the panasonic lumix ts2. I just bought one and I'm waiting on delivery. It's waterproof to 33 feet. It's freeze proof. It's drop resistant from 6 feet. Dust proof. Takes great pics from the reviews and does hd video. You can find them for $300 to $350. I got the orange one. Check it out.

Canon

My personal favorites have been Canon Powershot. My wife liked her Canon Powershot SD630 but has since changed to a Canon Powershot SD780 IS. It's very compact, 12.1mp, decent options and has worked out very well. It was in the high 100 range, not too bad.

Now that we're good with a point and shoot, we are researching which DSLR to get.

What would be the consensus on a Canon G9? I found a used one locally for $250.

Great camera. I've printed fairly large shots from the G9, like this one below, which when viewed at a normal distance are indistinguishable from a shot taken with a DSLR. So long as you keep your expectations in check I think you'd be tickeled pink with what the G9 is capable of. I'm not sure what the market is for them right now so I don't know if $250 is a good price or not. It sounds fair however.

That is a good price for a G9 - I crunched mine and have been looking for a replacement for a couple of weeks - prices are all over the place from $500 to $175 (missed that one). I loved mine and have a ton of extras for it, hence the desire to replace it.
