SMB - New bumper options from CBI Off Road Fab

My wife and I recently acquired an 03' Sportsmobile EB50. It had Aluminess bumpers that were supposedly one of the original prototypes. While I like their products, they didn't meet our needs and were due for replacement.

CBI had done a lot of work on my 11' 4Runner, creating a custom rear bumper and auxiliary fuel cell. See more here http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/5th-gen-4runner-gets-a-few-cbi-mods.html They exceeded my expectations in their quality of work, pricing and most of all customer service. I've put their products to the test and they have held up very well so it was a no brained to have them build me some new bumpers for the SMB. They are also going to upgrade/replace the Quigley control arm setup with strong er and more modern components.

You can follow the progress here. http://www.cbioffroadfab.com/sportsmobile-upgrades.html

I met a Dodge owner last week who had an Aluminess bumper up front. The ends resonate and drive him nuts. Also the brushguard portion is formed to angle forward quite a bit.

???? Can you elaborate please?

WarnerD9: I checked out the pics at CBI - can you please explain why the bumpers are designed the way they are - flat plates sandwiching round tubes? Does it result in a stronger structure for a similar weight? Are you going to use the tubes for air tanks? I have to say that they look odd, but if you can explain the reasons, then I may come to like them. Thanks.

Flat plates with stamp holes on top make for sure footing. Plate on the ends make for better transitions and added strength. Not the best option for weight savings but it's something different and the plate will reinforce the tube. I like aluminum but I don't think it's the best material for bumper construction on such a heavy vehicle. The 5" tube is more proportional with the size of the vehicle vs a 1.75-2" for the whole thing. Probably isn't for everyone but I think it will do the job and come together nicely once it's finished. Stay tuned, should be done on the 17th.

Will you be selling your Aluminess bumpers?

They are not the ones that you are used to. They don't have winch mount accommodations, just storage. They also need refurbishing. You are welcome to make an offer and I will consider it but they will most likely go to a friend building a similar vehicle.

We have heard this feedback from one of our customers and fixed the issue with some additional bracing along the ends. The bumper wraps way around the truck on the Dodge trucks due to the design of the vehicle which caused the ends to resonate in certain situations.

The brush guard tilts forward on some of the Dodge trucks because the grill opens with the hood. On bumpers that don't house winches on the inside of the bumper we are able to slim the bumper down but the brush guard gets in the way if we make it go straight up.

We are more than accommodating to our customers requests for custom products. If the custom work doesn't cost us any more then we don't charge any more for it. We have done numerous custom brush guards for our customers based on designs they have seen and liked, or designed they dreamed up themselves. We are also always evolving our products and improving them based on feedback from our customers and through our own experiences.

I had CBI build a custom rear bumper for my F-250. It has the works, dual can carriers, spare tire, propane tank, work light and a fold down table custom sized for my Partner stove. It has had the weight of the truck and camper on it without issues. I've had ARB, Reunell, Slee, Demello and a few other bumpers. The service and quality of CBI is top notch.

They do custom orders. I don't believe they have a production line for f-150 ( might have changed) but they do great custom work
