So I'm going a different route...

About a month ago I wrecked my TJ. It was a great vehicle and did everything I asked of it but her time has passed an I must move on. And while I like all the JKUs and JKs, the WJs, I see on this board, none of those called to me. I lusted in a different direction. Something with character, something you weren't quite sure if it made sense to buy, something that might break down, something that drives like an old school bus... I bought a 1983 CJ-7. This thread will help as I begin prepping it for my winter DD, hunting/fishing/camping rig, and overland towards the western and northern US rig.

So what had happened was... after I wrecked the TJ I began to look for it's replacement. I knew the replacement would be another Jeep but I did not know which one. The basics at purchase were that it needed to have 4wd, needed to be able to tow my 1942 Willys MBT full of camping stuff, and to take my family of 4 around during the winter. My lovely, and very understanding wife, agreed that an old CJ-7 wasn't that much different than my old TJ, and agreed that it would fit what we needed it to do. I am a lucky man. I began looking at CJ-8s but $$$$ became a factor, or should I say $$$$$ cause those things are really going up. I soon realized I could get a nice CJ-7 for what I could get a ratty CJ-8 or TJ for, and I bought a CJ-7.

I went to look at a CJ add that said "1983, 6cyl, 5spd, hardtop". When I arrived the seller was a retired fireman from out in California and such a nice guy to deal with. I also found a rust free CJ-7 with a 4.2 block and a 4.0 head, a 5spd transmission, aftermarket a/c unit, etc. I checked it out and took it for a test drive where everything seemed in working order. I made an offer and he agreed. I barely slept that night thinking about my new purchase.

The following day I went back to pick it up and he said "before we do the paperwork help me get the extra parts". Extra parts?!?! What extra parts? He proceeded to unload half his garage onto the driveway for me to take home. Boxes and boxes full of new parts for the CJ. Then we went inside and after signing the title he said "let me get you the book". What book? He had already given me 3 repair manuals in the extra parts stash from the driveway. Well "the book" was a 3 ring binder full of receipts for all the work that had been performed on the CJ since the early 1990's. What a valuable source of information. As of two weeks ago this is mine, and where I start my project:

Some of the extra parts: Not pictured are the books, smaller parts, bikini tops, tools, fasteners, etc.

That is beautiful man. Such a cool Jeep and a and an even cooler story! I completely agree with you, those old Jeeps have so much character and such a great personality. There's really nothing like them. Congrats man.

One of the other things I knew going into an old CJ purchase was that I wanted added roll bar protection, and a better seat for my kiddos. I found a local guy who welded up rear hoops and cross bars into the existing cage. (Fantastic work and turn around time) I got it back and added a Bestop fold and tumble seat but it also has headrests and sits higher than the standard CJ seat. I also ordered new seat belts for the front and rear. The front had 33 year old 3 points and the rear only had lap belts. I don't have the rears yet but soon. I added sound deadening under the floor carpet and will be adding more sound deadening and some carpet on the wheel wells.

Sorry for the sidewise pic, if someone can tell me how to correct that I will.

To finish the opening intro I must mention one story about the man I bought it from. I said he was a retired fireman, well his son decided to follow in dad's footsteps and he also became a fireman. In 2013 his son was one of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who was killed trying to fight a wildfire. The man who I got the Jeep from had this sticker on the back window. I can assure you that sticker is staying in it's current location.

Have fun with it. My neighbor has an '83 CJ7 he bought in '85 so we have had many fun years out there in our Jeeps.

Congrats on the CJ purchase...good choice and nice vehicle. I took the same route. One reason I got rid of my JKUR and started looking for a CJ was because of simplicity. Modern vehicles are much harder to work on in the field. And there's something slightly askew with having to reboot a vehicle in the wilderness, which I had to do once. Modern conveniences can be very inconvenient. I probably should never have gotten rid of my '03 Rubicon, but I thought I wanted a 4-door. Big mistake. After I traded the JK for a fancy new GMC Canyon, I started looking for a good CJ to use on backcountry expeditions. I had no idea that I was about to get incredibly lucky and win the CJ lottery. I looked at several CJs...but then one day, I just happened to run into the ex-wife of the fellow to whom I sold my 1982 Scrambler in 1996, a vehicle that I bought new in '82. She told me how to find him and I was able to convince him that it belonged back in my garage. He had put fewer than 9000 miles on it in 20 years. You might enjoy the thread that I started several months ago: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/155223-A-Scrambler-s-Homecoming?highlight=scrambler%27s

Thanks guys. I am excited.

Moabin- thanks for the link your your thread, that is an awesome story. I had a CJ5 to start and while I do wonder where it is, I don't want that one back. I'm really liking this CJ7.

My CJ7 has had some upgrades done like Mopar FI, rear disc brakes, T5 transmission, etc. And I'm ok wth all that, as it makes it more able to handle today's streets and traffic. There are still some other things I want to do, but I promise it won't be on tons, with a blown V8 and automatic, 10" of lift and 40" boggers. Mine will be more about getting to those hard to reach fishing holes and camping spots with my kiddos and better half in tow.

I am wondering how it would look without the diamond plate or if the diamond player was black.

That's awesome!

I did something similar with the kid I sold my '90 Bronco to a few years ago. In addition to the Bronco I ended up throwing in a bunch of extra parts, including a short-block (351w) as I was planning on rebuilding it to swap out the old 5.0. Repair manuals, brand new warn premium manual locking hubs, etc. The kid looked shocked when I started pulling out stuff to throw in the back. lol

I felt good about it though. He was just graduated from high school and had saved up to buy something, so I took care of him.

I am in the process of replacing all the front 3 point seat belts, and adding 3 point belts to the rear. While there is no rust on the CJ, and these may be factory, but all the belts are held in with these eye bolts and in some of the tighter spots are making their removal O so much fun...

In addition when I removed the rear carpet to get the new seat in I found the old CB radio wires were still in place and attached to the mount, but not antenna. I'm not sure if one can be added to the mount or not.
