Sliding or not, a cargo platform over top of the bed is a whole different world in terms of cargo space.

The stuck topic in our Storage subforum has a few excellent examples of home-built trays like that, many with roller skate bearings as both mechanism and trap for fixed frames. Real straight-forward builds, pretty easy to do.
