Check out

www.thenewx.org for a wider range of info but here are some basics.
I have owned 2 Gen 1 Xterras and a Gen 2 Xterra.
Gen 1: Is more truck like in all aspects. 3.3 Motor is 160-220 HPs, has a true manual transfer case, Simple and to the point.
I would stay away from the Supercharger. Has knock sensor issues.. Doesn't allow you to get the benefits of owning the SC.
You can add larger tires up to 32" with no issues.. You can lift 1.5" with cranking the torsion bars and adding rear shackles.
Once you add 33" tires you will start to feel the power loss but this is true with both versions, re-gears may be needed. The Gen2 has a larger engine to help this a touch. Has a pretty good offering of aftermarket support. You will not see this like your current Jeep though.
Price is pretty sweet for a 2000-2004 Xterra 3k-8k depending on your area. Has a few issues... Cracked exhaust manifolds are typical..
Headers fix this issue nicely. Has a timing belt that needs changed every 105k, Alternator is low on the motor.. 2000-2001 has 3 leaf springs and a overload, 2002-2004 has 2 leafs and a overload.
Offered in both AT and MT. Leather was an option but seems to be a hard find. If you are looking for a SUV you can beat up a little and not worry about it then I would head this way. Shares parts with 1998-2004 Frontier Motor was a common add in many of Nissans of the late 90s and early 2000s
Gen 2: 2005-2008 Mild front grill change 2009-2014 4.0 V6 - 261 HP
Slightly larger and much more comfort on the inside.. Basically what you would expect in the next version of the Xterra. Not as simple to lift.
Does have known radiator/ Tranny issues in the AT. The tranny radiator inside the Main radiator seems to crack near the 100k mark.
2005-2009 ran a different tranny fluid that was thought to cause a crack in the lines and allow coolant to mix with the tranny fluid and killing the
AT. Simple by pass can fix this issue.. Or you are starting to see better radiators on the market. Known timing chain issues, Shares the Titan F platform..
Off Road/ Pro4x offers a rear electric locker. More and more aftermarket is being offered. Larger tires can be added before re-gearing is needed.
2005 has known weaker spider gear issues. 4.0 V6 is common with the 2005-2014 Frontier
Price: 6k-30k depending on area.
Those are a few basics..
Check out the forums and see what others have done with them..
XP is a nice spot to glance but you will learn much more on the other forums..
Happy hunting
