So very, very tempted. Quote: "JUST ARRIVED - Direct German army U1300L ambulance! Very rare and desirable spec with OM366A turbo engine and fast axles..." 34k miles from new..

Even though it would totally and completely clean me out, before even starting the build.. so it would take quite some time to complete..

I am so, so, so tempted.. I can drive there in maybe four hours from here..

I daren't. But I want it so bad it hurts.

I keep watching the videos of 'Kamillo' on youtube, as this mog is an almost identical starting point.. :Wow1:

Somebody please, buy it and end my suffering!!

They are amazing trucks. I have a similar one shipping from Germany this week. My plan is to clear out the back, add bed, fridge and a few Pelican footlockers and then go exploring the Aussie bush. Mine takes 6 weeks to ship, you can be at AV in no time....go for it Benw.....you could be exploring by this weekend.

Hmmm! I'd be tempted to very thoroughly research buying in German, then buy direct and save a lot of money!

Money to convert and travel...

Good point! Buy direct and save tons of $$$$. Also keep in mind, that those trucks have low millage. Means, they have been standing for most of their life. I was in the German Airforce for many years and have driven those exact Unimogs. Tons of fun! But I recall that they constantly had some type of issues that needed repairs. Mostly oil leaks, stuck valves and RUST. Anyhow, that just as a hint. If you just have "enough" cash to buy a Mog and nothing extra, don't do it.
I had one in Germany, loved driving it, but the cost of keeping it on the road was way over the top.

Good luck!

OMG THAT'S A LOT! Atkinson Vos guarantee no leaks and a new head gasket at that price?
Have you actually driven one of exactly this model? They're fun but after hundreds of thousands of km less so. Go to Steven Stuart's pages and read it all, then go to Vebeg.de and see what AV buy them at.
Only you can then decide if the markup is worth it, if you're rubbish mechanically then probably.

Well it's lower standing height inside, but it DOES have aircon!
Still F expensive for a 22 year old truck on which all the seals will have dried out...

Lots of these (Ex-Military Krankenwagen's, and other Ex-BW units) have been re-run though the factory for a full rebuild. Friend of mine purchased a Ex-Krankenwagen with 4900km's on it after rebuild. During the rebuild, brand new, updated brake calipers and rotors were fitted, new, newer style transmission (UG-65), new factory engine (OM366A), all new hub drive seals, brake hoses, and a host of other seals were replaced, updated the air system from the old alcohol injector type to the newer Decandescent type, and a bunch of other updates and upgrades. Basically, no expense spared type of rebuild. While it was still in Germany he had it shipped to the Hellgeth brothers for an upgrade to 240+hp, it really moves, trust me. And he acquired it for a lot more reasonable price than that unit.

You can tell the rebuilt units as they will have a tag in the cab on the passenger side with a date of the full rebuild, sort of like a new birth certificate.

If you're looking, I'd recommend Andy @ VKCars, I purchased my U1300L RW1 from him without a hitch, (15,000 original km's on it when I got it, now at 40,000 without any major issues) and he arranged shipping to Canada. You can buy direct from Vebeg but it can be a crap shoot for what you get.

For a 25year+ old truck, virtually every part is still available, anywhere in the world, and they are easy to work on, can't say that for every vehicle of that vintage :)

Agree wholeheartedly on the crap shoot; I think, (is it trying to fire crap out of a gun or trying to kill a crap?)
Certainly pot luck unless you really take the time to go and see the trucks before bidding. Naturally if you find it's one of the rebuilt ones then all the better. Vebeg doesn't seem to give very many details and there's some groundwork to do.
Not many have the time to do this so accept paying more for someone else to do it for them

First things first, decide if you can live in a truck you cannot stand up in. Plan your layout carefully. Is this to live in for a year long trip, or just for weekend camping trips in nice weather - very different requirements.

I really like the idea that they are low and narrow, i.e. no wider than the wheels, and no taller than the cab so they are great on trails with low branches, roads with low bridges etc. And narrow so you can get around tight turns in small villages, woods etc.

If you love Mogs, then you love Mogs. You need to be ready to foot some terrible bills if you need to get work done, and they do need more maintenance and TLC than most long distance commercial trucks, but they are kind of one of a kind. sort of like the defender of the 4x4 scene, you either love or hate them.

For me, I'd love one for short trips, but I'm not sure I could live in the small back part for more than a few weeks at a time unless I was in a warm dry climate and could live out of doors a lot.

Merv.
