!!! Big Update !!! We just found out that we have a head gasket leak, which means it has to be swapped at some point soon. If you're mechanically handy and know what you do, or if you know a good mechanic, this might be a good opportunity for you to get a van like that for a reasonable price.
That means, we're selling our Mercedes Sprinter T1N 1999 312D 4x4 5-speed manual transmission as soon as possible on the west Coast of the USA. The van was basically fully restored within the last year and is currently located a little bit north of LA.

The Sprinter has German papers and could be already officially imported to Canada or to the USA from February 2024. Otherwise it could be bought from anyone in Europe to continue to travel with it through the americas like we did.

This adventure rig is the perfect starting point for a once in a lifetime adventure trip and as one of the Mechanics in the USA said „this is the most heavy duty 4x4 sprinter I have ever seen“.
The vehicle is very maneuverable, perfect for stealth camping and it will take you to almost any beautiful place. You are not dependent on campsites, because in this fully equipped motorhome, everything you need is on board. The vehicle is ready to roll for the next big trip when we hand it over. Included is kitchen equipment, outdoor chairs and table, very well equipped tool box, two spare jerry cans, external, Viar 80p tire inflator, paddleboard, portable grill/firepit etc.

THE CAR: The Sprinter was produced in 1999 with one of the best engines Mercedes has ever produced, the OM602 2.9 TD with 122 hp. It has always been well maintained and works perfectly. The mileage is currently around 480 TKM. The engine is, contrary to newer engines, very robust and designed for over 1 million KM (even Miles —> check Wikipedia). The all-wheel drive transmission is original from Mercedes, switchable and with 2 differential locks. It’s also 5-speed manual transmission and rolls on 225 75 BF Goodrich AT with 16 inch alloy wheels with excellent grip in all conditions (bought in April/2022). The spare tire is mounted in the back of the van and has the same 16 inch alloy wheels with Goodrich AT Tires. The seats are multi-adjustable with suspension, armrests, swivel and new covers for relaxed travel. Cruise control makes it easy to maintain speed. All doors are centrally locked with remote control and additional security locks on each door. The van also has a hidden kill switch. Music is being played from a Radio with USB, SD Card and Aux port, a Bluetooth adapter, new NVX speakers and an active subwoofer. A rearview camera assists while reversing.

THE BUILD: This is NOT a hipster build out of wood, the interior is made out of aluminum profiles, it'll last and won't fall apart while driving washboard and off-road. The double bed as well as the single bed provide comfortable sleep on the road. The double bed is a bit on the smaller side but can be easily expanded by adding flares to the van. (Size of double bed: 5’10“ length, 4’2“ wide at the head side, 3’5“ wide at the feet due to bathroom) The bathroom with a sink, hot water shower and separating toilet ensures optimal comfort everywhere. Two built in Fans will take care of moisture or bad smells in the bathroom. The kitchen with 2 burner propane stove, sink and 40l compressor refrigerator makes you independent. The seating area offers space for 3-4 people. There is also plenty of storage space for food supplies, clothing and sports equipment such as surf gear or bicycles. 14 small and 2 big euro boxes in the back, aswell as 4 boxes above the cab will help you with the organization. Compared to some other builds, this van is really bright, due to its big original Mercedes windows in the living area and a big skylight in the bedroom area. The windows have blinds and mosquito nets installed. The driver and passenger side windows have Window Visor Vents/Rain Guards. We also have insulated window covers for the windshield, drivers and passenger side window. The roof rack is equipped with a surf rack on one side, a warm LED strip equipped awning (Fiamma F45s on the other side and two bright LED Light bars in front, to find the best campspots even in the darkest conditions. The two sandboards are installed in the back of the van and helped us mounting two more surfboards in the back.

ELECTRICS: The vehicle is powered by a 220 watt solar panel with a MPPT controller and a charge booster. It is equipped with 1x ACDelco 900cca 150RC starter battery and 2x 105 AH deep cycle batteries, which we have bought in April 2022, so they still have warranty. There is also a few sockets for 12V, USB and 240V (via our 300W volt inverter) throughout the van. When it’s cold outside, the diesel heater will help to quickly heat up the camper. When it’s hot, the vans AC unit or the 2x wireless USB-C chargable Fans will cool you down. All lights inside the van are LEDs and the main lights are dimmable.

WATER: 90l (23,7 Gallon) fresh water, 10l (2,64 Gallon) hot water boiler, 80l (21 Gallon) grey water and 20l (5,28 Gallon) Pee tank helped us being in the wild for around 7 days. We also have a long hose and several adapters to refill the tank anywhere you can imagine. We used a carbon filter before the water gets into the tank. The kitchen sink has two faucets, one for general use and the outdoor shower, the other one has two inline filters for drinking water. A set of spare filters come with the van.

The vehicle is in very good condition, without any problems. A small crack in the window and the ABS light in the dash is the only thing that needs to be taken care of. It’s probably a faulty sensor, or the cable. We swapped one Sensor, but it looks like it wasn’t the broken one. We searched a long time to find this specific Sprinter model and invested a lot to equip it for self-sufficient long term travel. It is an optimal vehicle for long distance travel with 2-3 people. Low Consumption (11 L / 100 KM or 21,38 MPG), unobtrusive appearance, simple, reliable, very robust technology and it comes with many spare parts and tools to take pretty much the whole car apart.

Text us to get one step closer to your dream trip and a one of a kind sprinter van (t-ass@gmx.de or +1 442 375 9330).

To keep the vans good condition and prepare ourselves for the trip we did the following maintainance within the last year:
- New Filters: air filter (cabin and engine), oil filters (every 10000km), new diesel filter (spares come with the van)
- New brake lines - New brakes all around (rotors, pads and even hand brake), calipers in the back (spare brake pads come with the van)
- All Tires with plenty of life left (20k miles on them)
- New batteries
- New alternator
- New fluid for the differentials, transmission and transfer case (no sign of wear in the old oil)
- New coolant
- New Ball Joints on a-arms
- New shocks and struts (new bolts aswell)
- New leaf springs (front and back)
- New CV Boots on both sides
- New swaybar bushings in the back
- New Glowplugs
- New V-Belt, pulleys, tensioner etc.
- New carrier bearing
- New Muffler
- New fan clutch (the old one was still working, but we changed it in advance together with the pulleys and v-belt)
- New injection pump solenoid valve
- new transmission mount

Hi we are interested. We are near Ottawa Canada. We sold or Mercedes 917AF a few years ago and are considering something smaller. Unfortunately price may be a sticking point. Good luck with the sale, keep us informed.
Cheers, Joe

Hi Joe, I know this thread was a while back, but I figured you would know, what was the exterior length and width of the habitat box you had on the MB 917AF? I am in the planning stage of my build and I want to have good access to USFS road, bridges, tunnels, etc but also have enough space as I will be living in my rig full time. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Overall the truck is 2.4mX 3.6mX7.9m
the box is approx 18' long. 4" floor 80" interior height 3" roof and I think the walls are 2 1/2". It is too high for White rim and the tunnel at Zion. That was the only trail we could not do because of size.

If you ship it it out of Baltimore, rather than the West coast the shipping cost to Europe will be much less by about 1000USD
