SOLD as of April 2015 -sorry for any confusion
We have wrapped up our spring break trip and the van is now for sale
No trades except for another similar van with a floor plan that would better suit our needs (EB-50 or 51)
With great hesitation we have decided to sell our Sportsmobile. We are the second owners and have had it for just over one year. We bought it from an older couple that had lived/owned the van in Colorado for many years before relocating to Florida. According to the original owners when this van was built at Sportsmobile-TX, it was the most expensive Sportsmobile they had built up to that point. It is loaded with many options not often found in standard Sportsmobile builds. We are only considering selling due to change in family size (about to have our second child). This is a custom floor plan that includes extensive counter space, bathroom/shower compartment, slide-out pantry, larger refrigerator, etc.
If you are not familiar with the very sought-after 7.3L diesel, do some research. . .it is a very durable engine that routinely runs 500,000 miles with regular maintenance. When we were looking for a Sportsmobile, we did not consider the 6.0L engine due to numerous reliability issues that can be remedied but at a cost. The V10 was the other option. . .supposed to be a great engine but would be less fuel efficient and likely not as reliable in the longterm. We almost always get at least 16mpg on the highway (vs. 10-12 for the V10 on a 4X4 high top van). Although I was initially concerned about buying a van that had 200,000 miles, after I did some research on the engine and saw the extensive maintenance history from the original owners, it seemed like a better path than getting a van with the V10 or 6.0L and much lower miles. Since we have owned we have had all maintenance and work done at specialty diesel shops.
This floorplan is perfect for a couple or maybe a family of three with a young child. The high top and fully contained bathroom allows stealth camping anywhere...vs vans with pop ups. The other big advantages over pop ups is storage space, headroom to move about when (much lower in a pop up unless the top is up), and warmth (this thing is well insulated and is amazing for winter camping. The disadvantage is only one bed. . .72X48. The bathroom compartment doubles as an indoor storage compartment for bikes...when you don't want nice bikes out on the hitch rack.
The floor plan was custom: On the driver's side front to back it's the shower w/porta-potti, the refrigerator with microwave above and Star Cool above that, slide out pantry, hanging closet, then fold down couch/bed with TV. On the passenger side, it's sink with water heater and storage under, 2 burner flat top electric stove with storage under as well as propane furnace, balance of counter top with storage under, and again the couch/bed with 20 gallon potable water tank under it.

The van just got an oil change (Rotella) and is getting all fluids changed this week. High top was repainted last year (had clear coat peeling due to age). Driver side was repainted as well. . .there had been a rack mounted on the side that had left a few marks that were not touched up well. These things are all taken care of now. The turbo up pipe was just replaced with an aftermarket bellowed version to address a common problem with the factory version (crush donuts prone to leakage).
Forgot in original post. . .just got a new heavy duty alternator and new fuel filter. I have several folders of receipts and a 30+ page log book from the original owner documenting all maintenance/repairs. . .even where and how much gas was bought.
The bumpers are super strong - steel - not aluminum, made by Reunel. They include built in lights, front winch, swing out tire carrier, and swing out basket. They were just professionally powder coated black and turned out great.
Don't bother me with scams or low-ball offers. We are not desperate to sell or in a rush...just want something that will better accommodate our growing family.
