Thanks for the detailed response. When I get back home at the end of the week I will mock this up to see how it goes.
I spent some time over on whiteacorns site, what a great resource. He really conveys well what it's like to own a unimog. I would encourage anyone else interested in a unimog to check it out.

One thing that I noticed was about the noise level at highway speeds. With the vast distances in the US traveling at 60-70 mph will be common and for long durations. Can you comment as to the experience driving the long distance from Colorado?

I really don't find noise to be an issue with the U500. My previous Unimog was an early 90's U1550L (square cab design) which was little noisy, but it was a totally different design. The U500 is quieter and a lot more comfortable than the U1500L and you can easily chat to your passenger without the need to raise your voice or shout. It is a big vehicle, with big tires and a diesel engine, so its not going to be whisper quiet like a hybrid or a luxury sedan. I found the cab to be very comfortable on my journey from Colorado. The cab is constructed of a composite material (not metal), is well lined and considerably quieter than previous generations of Unimog. These vehicles were designed for operators to spend long hours in harsh working environments, so were built to be as comfortable and ergonomic as possible. I spent some very long days in the cab covering a lot of miles and had no complaints. There is a lot of glass in the cab (huge windshield, large side windows, etc.) so if you are contemplating long days behind the wheel in very sunny conditions I'd suggest applying some sunscreen. Unfortunately, the sun only comes out three times a year here in British Columbia so that's not an issue I have to contend with often.

To answer the query about the brakes, they are as follows:

Service Brake
Dual circuit air brake system. Disc brakes; asbestos free brake pads, anti-lock braking system (ABS), air dryer. ABS can be manually switched off.

Parking Brake
Compressed air/spring-operated brake acting on rear wheels. Position of execution lever in center control panel

Exhaust Brake
Actuated electrically/pneumatically with multi-function lever, speed adjustment and cruise control, right of steering wheel (2-
step for head cylinder valve and throttle valve in exhaust stream)

Yeah and I'm left handed also. It's making it very difficult to find something used that would accommodate. All these used earthroamers coming up for sale and their cabin is 6'3". I know one is not standing all day in a camper but I think I would get cabin fever if there was not some headroom clearance.

I'm 6'4" and the inside height of my campervan is 6'2". It's not a problem at all unless I try to stand military style. If I just slouch a bit the way I normally do, I never hit my head, except on the hand crank handle for the roof vent. When sitting on the furniture, I can just touch the ceiling with my fingertips if I stretch a bit. Plenty, and no cabin fever at all.
