Nomads365
A Most Adventurous Couple
Your search for the perfect rig to explore from Alaska to Argentina, or from Baja to Newfoundland is over. This setup was built specifically for this type of traveling, and now it can be yours. It lacks nothing, other than a driver, and is ready to take off and begin adventuring today. No need to wait for that other custom rig you've decided to build or have put a deposit down on just to have to wait a year or two. You can begin your adventure this week!
The truck is currently located in the shadow of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains in Gardnerville Nevada, just a short drive south of Reno.
No, I won't break up and sell the Dodge and the XPCamper separately, but you're certainly welcome to buy it and do so yourself.
Sorry for the long post, there's a lot to list here, especially for folks not familiar with the XPCamper. Due to limitations it will be in multiple parts.
The Nomads (that’s us)
We built this truck/camper combo specifically to travel the PanAmerican highway from Alaska to Argentina like many other overland travelers have done. We sought out a camper that would fit our needs for long-term travels in a level of comfort we desired. We wanted to spend minimal time (if any) in RV parks or established campgrounds, choosing instead to boondock camp in areas hard to reach in standard RV vehicles. We chose the Gen-3 Dodge Ram as our truck platform due to its extremely dependable and proven Cummins 5.9L diesel engine, no emission control systems, known durability and creature comforts that came with the Laramie package. We searched the country for this fabled ‘unicorn’ truck with 4WD, dual rear wheels (later converted to singles), 6-speed manual transmission and the top-of-the-line Laramie trim package. We found it in our own hometown of Portland Oregon. Since finishing the truck build, adding the camper, and selling our house we’ve been traveling and living in our rig for 3.5 years, visiting half of the U.S. states, four Canadian territories, and 30 of the 31 states in Mexico. Our PanAm plans were dashed by Covid-19 border closures in March of 2020, forcing us into a long-term stay in Oaxaca Mexico. When borders began to open, instead of continuing south we decided to return to the U.S. and explore more of our home country. Our plans have changed again and our truck/camper rig is not part of our new plans. So, we’re offering this ultimate rig for sale to a new owner that’s ready to use it for their own adventures and exploration.
The Camper
This XPCamper system offers a much lower center of gravity and smaller frontal area than almost any other manufactured camper. Once stopped for the night, setup is fast and easy, getting you out of the elements quickly. The single fuel system (diesel), solar power system, large battery capacity and water tanks make the setup perfect for long-term off-grid boondock-style camping. The upgraded solar charging system allows for free and quick replenishing of any power you’ve used overnight while parked. The Blue Sea automatic charging relay (ACR) allows for charging the camper battery bank from the engine alternator while driving the truck or running the engine as needed in multiple days of inclement cloudy weather. The compact nature of the truck and camper when closed means the camper is suitable for container shipping to foreign countries if desired.
A flatbed-mounted camper with a side-entry door makes for a unique interior layout. It has everything you need for long-term travel including a full-size queen bed, quality marine Webasto diesel appliances, and a comfortable rear dinette with a huge top-hung panorama window. It has a clever indoor sit-down toilet and shower cubicle that, when closed, transforms into an extra work or food-prep surface, adding to the feeling of open space. The high ceiling of the camper allows for a 6’+ tall person to fully stand up inside the camper, and unlike other pop-up campers you can sit fully upright on the bed, meaning no need to hunch over. With a camper made from a monocoque composite construction, there is none of the worrying about stapled or screwed wood frames falling apart with extended off-road use, or thermal transfer and condensation as found in aluminum framing. The single use of diesel fuel for the truck, cooktop and heater means there’s no need for propane storage or filling, and the inherent condensation from using a liquified gas indoors. When the camper top is down, no entry can be made into the interior through windows or doors, a great safety feature for securing valuables when parked at a trailhead or while you’re away for the day.
Many of these campers have been used by full-time travelers for years at a time. Several Dodge Ram/XPCamper combo rigs have completed the Alaska-to-Argentina PanAm Highway journey before being shipped back to the U.S. to continue future explorations and journeys with new owners. They hold up incredibly well and retain their long-term value. See XPCamper owner James Young's review of their similar rig here: https://www.truckcamperadventure.com/review-of-the-nimbl-v1-xpcamper/
XPCamper production has been reborn as Nimbl Vehicles based in Colfax, CA. They are available as a resource for maintenance or repairs and upgrades. Visit them at https://nimblvehicles.com/.
The Truck
We’re the 2nd owner of the truck, and we purchased it directly from the original owner in Portland, OR (no rust) with 106,000 miles. The original owner was a handy-man and used it for only minimal towing of a flatbed trailer (no 5th wheel or even travel trailers). The engine has never been used with a “tuner” or souped up in any way. Early 2007 was the last year that diesel engines in the U.S. did not require Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), emissions controls, EGR, DPF, catalytic converters, or sometimes hard-to-locate DEF. It’s the perfect truck for those wanting to travel to areas with no ULSD such as Mexico, Latin America and South America. A clean CarFax report can be supplied upon request, all recalls performed, no accidents.
Mileage: Approx. 177,700 miles
