If you enjoy boondocking, exploring off grid, overlanding or expedition travel… take a close look at this truck camper. A lot of people look to Four Wheel Camper when thinking off road travel. But some want more comfort with similar capability and that’s what Northstar is known for. The Laredo SC (Self Contained) was designed to be a light weight 4 season truck camper for extended off grid travel. An agile 7' body width provides the ability to access remote campsites away from the crowds and is an ideal basecamp from which to explore!

One of our favorite features of this camper is the great visibility through the windows which are at just the right height to enjoy the views while drinking morning coffee or relaxing at the dinette after a long day on the slopes or trails. Four large acrylic dual pane awning windows really do bring the scenery inside! Other great features include: 40 gal fresh water tank, Thetford cassette toilet for easy dumping in any vault toilet or rest stop restroom, positive engagement cabinet latches to insure everything stays put when bouncing down back roads, lots of convenient storage for all your gear, and an interior shower!

The systems of this camper have been significantly upgraded from the OEM configuration. Electrical upgrades include a 100AH LiFeBlue LiFePO4 battery and a 1000 watt inverter to provide AC and DC power anywhere, anytime. Off grid recharging is handled by 200 watts of solar on the roof, 100 watts of portable solar, and a 30 amp DC/DC charger. The portable solar panels are compact, easy to deploy and stow, and are very useful mid-summer when purposely parked in the shade, and mid-winter when the sun is low in the sky. The portable panels are connected to the solar charge controller input with an SAE bulkhead connector installed on the underside of the camper and can be positioned perpendicular to the sun to maximize power output. All electronic components are Bluetooth enabled (including the battery).

The hot water and space heating systems have been augmented to provide redundancy and fuel choice flexibility. A diesel heater is installed in the extra space next to the hot water heater. This unit has the ability to turn down to a low burn that provides a nice even heat to maintain a very comfortable temperature during winter camping. As an added bonus, the 2.5 gallon externally mounted diesel tank can be conveniently filled at most gas stations. These compact diesel units have become very popular on van and camper builds for good reason!

A 125 watt silicone pad heater has been bonded to the outside of the propane hot water heater tank. In addition to providing an alternative energy source (solar) for heating water, the digital controller installed with this DC heating pad can be set at low temperature to prevent freezing of the hot water tank when the camper is not in use between trips. With the 30 amp DC/DC charger, it is possible to power the DC hot water heater, run the 3-way Dometic refrigerator on DC power, and top off the camper battery from the trucks electrical system while driving to your next destination!

Additional modifications to accommodate cold-weather camping when the outside temp drops below zero include: isolation valves on the water supply lines to the interior shower and external shower hose connection, and an air circulation fan that pulls warm air from the camper past the fresh water tank and into the cabinet space under the kitchen counter to insure the water supply lines to the sink are protected. With these modifications we have enjoyed mid-winter trips to the mountains in Colorado for back country skiing and snowshoeing with all the convenience and comforts a warm and cozy camper provides.

Your mods are great. I have a hard-side Bundutec. Doesn't seem like it would but the 7 foot width makes a significant difference in tight spaces. I typically tow a river boat of some sort and the smaller width means I can actually see to launch. I was going to add heating pads to my water tank and my lithium battery to extend my camping season. Going to steel your idea on the hot water tank as well. I also like the heater upgrade!

Your price is unbelievably reasonable.

Any photos of the externally mounted diesel tank? Do you have a link to the heater that is installed?

I bench tested a generic 2kW unit from amazon, but had ignition problems with the unit blowing grey smoke and not lighting off consistently. Replacing the burn chamber resolved the problem. It appears that some of the generic 2kW units at the time were shipping with a sub-par burn chamber that prevented consistent light-off. Visually, the difference between a '"good" and "bad" chamber was not obvious, but the "good" chamber was made with thicker walled tubing and appeared to have different components inside the burn chamber where the diesel is injected. As far as I know, the 5 kW units do not have this problem. I decided to purchase and install a Lavaner Pro 2 kW unit (linked below). This unit came with a "good" burn chamber and has been working without issue since installation in Mar 2021.

@knutsCO thanks for this info. Out of curiosity how do you fill the diesel tank when it is on the truck? Trying to figure out a good way to accomplish this on my Lance 815

Although a bit awkward, it is possible to remove the cap and fill the tank with the camper on a short bed truck (in my case Ford 6' 9" bed). There is enough room to insert a diesel pump nozzle into the tank and fill. The external diesel tank would have to relocated if the camper was installed on a long bed truck, however.
