ALERT: Rig has been SOLD

Hi everyone,

I have gone a different direction with rigs as I came to the realization that I didn't have the time to convert this into what I wanted.

Here's the info,

1984 Chevy CUCV M1010 Ambulance, basically a K30 truck with a big box on the back.
Detroit Diesel 6.2L "J" code engine with 43,000 original miles
TH400 3 speed auto
NP 208 transfer case
D60 front axle with 4.56 gears
GM Corp. 14 bolt, full floater rear axle with 4.56 gears and Detroit locker
Hummer H2 17" wheels
Pro Comp Xtreme A/T tires, 35x12.5-17, like new
ORD Heavy Duty Steering Brace kit
ORD 2.5" shackle reversal
Tiny Tach LED tachometer
Converted to 100% 12 volt system, including new 200 amp alternator and gear reduction starter
Penisular Diesel glow plug timer (auto and manual settings)
Keneddy Quick Heat glow plugs
Also included but not installed, spare H2 wheel/Pro Comp tire, Mile Marker Premium Hubs

The rear box has been gutted and is ready for whatever build up you would like to do. Interior demensions are 107" deep, 75" wide, 65" tall.

Starts very easily without smoking. Runs, drives and brakes just fine with no issues. Other than a few surface rust spots on the hood where the paint was chipped off, no rust in cab, fenders, etc. Box is all aluminum so no rust issues for it. About the only thing it really needs to get done is a 2-3" lift on the front to help bring it more level. I was going to do that after I got some weight in the back to see where it would end up settling. Box A/C system still installed but not working due to being a 24 volt system. Rig is 100% 12 volts.

Currently registered in CA with no issue. Smog exempt in CA.

Well, the feeler is no longer accurate... pending sale is the new status.

Chalcochima has place a deposit and will be picking it up later in the month. I won't spoil any surprises but lets just say he has an epic trip planned for this rig. I'll let him fill in the details when he is ready. Thanks Edgard!

You are very welcome Mike.

I have been looking for a mode of transportation for my, as you call it, epic trip. I wanted something reliable and something that could be worked in the most obscures places on earth. Indeed, the Spartan M1010 fits the bill. Especially after all the nice work you put into.

I went originally from a Ural 4320 diesel, Gaz 66, Dodge Ram 12V diesel to a landcruiser. Yeah I know I like Russian trucks. They all have pros and cons, among them: price, availability, comfort, etc. etc etc.

During an e-mail exchange with Douglas Hackney, he told me that if he were to do it again, he would not spend so much time and money on the vehicle but rather in enjoying the trip and the family. He would have just picked up something inexpensive from CL and start the trip. If it breaks, drop it and get something else.

If you follow this train of thought, you would probably spend much, much less than a Unicat; and I mean no disrespect to any mobile cat on 4 or 6 wheels.
Under those basic parameters I chose your M1010.

I plan not to do much to the overall mechanical integrity of the truck. You have already done what I would have envisioned doing. I will play very little with the gears; perhaps just enough to go down the road at 60 or even better yet at 65mph. I need air-conditioning and re-check all the fluids and brakes.

I plan to build a submarine type bunk bed for my wife and 2 daughters, install a landcruiser third seat in the back, the folding ones, paint the truck with a more urban color and I am set. All my cooking utensils from my camping gear, tools, h2o, spare parts will be nicely stored.

Here comes the fun part now. It is my intention to take a trip from Alaska all the way to the tip of Chile. So, as time approaches, believe me when I say: the last I think about now is the truck but rather in making plans with my girls of all the places we will se. They are in charge of the map and they are my GPS figuratively and literally.

Happy trails

That sounds like a really cool idea. I woul love to do that. But aren't you worried about the Mexican Mafia wars or whatever it is they've got goin' down there?

Greeting One Guy,

yes I am a bit concerned. No amount of precaution will prevent something to happen. I have been to Northern Mexico a million times and I was never bodered by anyone. However,Just in case, I am headed through Baja California all the way to La Paz. From there, I will take a ferry to Mazatlan and bypass the northern states of Sonora and Sinaloa. From Mazatlan I go straight to Guadalajara. with out stopping. The whole point is to to get past Mexico City where things are a bit more calm.

Sounds like you've got a good plan. I only ask because my friends cousin was killed there a couple months back. That's deterred my exploration determination for that area.
