I've still got to sort out and water test the new boat. It's another Bayrunner that is only 18 inches longer but with a smaller 48hp and no trim. Hopefully I get the chance to see what one I like the best before this one sells. I could not pass the oportunity to see if the 18' is too big. It's about 200 lbs heavier. Still about 1/3 the weight of a typical bass or ski rig. The one listed has been my favorite boat. I'd love to see somebody else on expo get to use it.

Right on! Congrats on the sale- I acquired a 16 foot Lund Alaskan from my uncle.. It's his old duck boat with tiller outboard. We will have to plan some overnight boat camp adventure for sure.

That sounds like a good trip! I love tiller boats the best. One hand on the prop and the other on the hull. I just put quick turn 3:1 steering with anti feedback on the new boat but that's as good as it gets with a wheel. You will luv that hull. I've had two other 16' aluminum boats over the years with a tiller. New boat came with a merc 8hp as a kicker motor that's just begging me to drag home a 14 foot aluminum hull. Lund is about as good as they get. Maybe I'll find one. The vids on their website showing the factory workers are great. Glass boats suck gas and you can't pull them up on the rocks to explore. Only glass boat I want is a 26' C-Dory Venture to do the Pacific North West to Alaska and "The Great Loop". Only because Aluminum Trawlers and pilot house boats cost more than my house.

Tomcat 255. They made the berth bigger - 7' long now. With a couple of these on it:

You see the new Ranger Tug outboard?

Ranger Tugs are at the top of the food chain right now in trawlers but they are going mainstream to expand their market share. They put sterndrive contraptions in most of the bigger ones. I liked the older and some new Rangers with the tiny Yanmar inboard diesels. They measured fuel use in pints per hour. The good thing is that there is a market for new boats today that we can buy used tomorrow. I wish the aluminum Eco Trawler would sell better. http://www.trawlersmidwest.com/eco_trawler.htm

Yea, but did they ever actually build more than two of those?

And Ranger put sterndrives in all of them I think, but now they've came up with a new outboard setup:

Triton Marine makes C-dory, Ranger Tugs, Scagit Orca and Cutwater.

I still want the Tomcat with Oxe deisels. It would have a hell of a lot of range (700 mi. maybe?) in putt-putt mode and also be able to go fast (outrun weather) when needed.

And would't roll nearly as much while I'm dozing.

Plus the Oxes each have a 130a alternator and a hot water loop for cabin heating.

A year ago you still could not get Oxes in the US or Canada. Another great use for it would be on a Rosborough RF-246. Wish it had a real shower.

You know your boats and yes any Ranger with that diesel outboard would be the absolute best for PNW and Great Loop.

I'm such a cheap bastard that I'll probably do it on a used Nimble. Who says you need to be a millionair to have a yacht?

check out how cheap these are to buy and operate.

I still think if I was going right now it would be a C-Dory 23, 25 or 26. I don't want to pay to fuel the TomCat or an outdrive diesel tug. Outdrives break, waste energy and run too deep in the water but at least the Ranger uses the Volvo. The forum called C-Brats is good. The Ranger Tug forum called Tug Nuts is just as good. Both remind me of this site. Just got word of a third and final interview for a "real" job. If I get it and sock away another 100k I just may be on that Ranger Tug. But now that we are dreaming and this Overlanding...I bet you could get a pilot house landing craft with nice amenities built in and bring your Jeep.

Yea, they just passed U.S. cert last Oct., I think.

Been doing a lot of homework and number crunching the last couple of years. Used to have a '77 Starfire 240 that I mostly used in freshwater, but would also run it out to Catalina Island a couple times a year. The thing was a tank. Here's one (not mine):

http://thatmetalbox.com/ITEM/StarFire/

Mine was a bit different in that it had a little galley with alcohol stove, sink and fridge. Here's one with the galley:

Mine was also one of very few built with twin Mercruiser V8 I/O. I really came to appreciate the power in rough offshore weather and the twin engines made it very handy to maneuver in tight quarters.

Also had a bimini over the rear with full "camperback" canvas to enclose the entire rear.

Sold it decades ago, but the last few years the itch has been nagging at me again. :)

Yea those are nice for the price. Not really in love with the open bow models, and 75hp on a boat that size would probably make me nervous every time I saw a squall coming.

I don't want to pay to fuel the TomCat or an outdrive diesel tug.

I ran the numbers using published data, mashing up a Tomcat with a pair of 200hp Oxes. I don't have the figures handy, but at 7mph/1000rpm "trawler speed" the fuel usage numbers beat just about every other 25-30 foot 10,000 lb. boat I could find. Of course, it's just estimates until someone actually tries it.

Also, those Oxes are probably gonna be "real 'spensive" when they hit the market, so I was more looking at max range rather than fuel cost and the Tomcat has a pair of 75g tanks, which is how I came up with that 700mi range guesstimate (at trawler speed).

And then, there's the power. Older Tomcats were rated 300hp max, but the newer ones are rated 350hp max. With a pair of 150hp Hondas the thing will do 45mph so who knows with 400hp. Fast enough to be scary.

So, incredible range when trawling, plus the ability to push it hard when needed.

And the Oxes have a 2,000 hour TBOH, which would probably last me the rest of my life.

Agree to all.

Dad bought a new lime green 21' 1977 Wellcraft Nova. Wellcraft called them Novas befor Scarab. It had a 302 CI Mercruiser and there was a time or two we white knuckled that boat thru Barnegate inlet. Lack of power like you said in big water is scary. A double ender or Dory bobs and can handle following seas without the power. Here is a double ender (notice the rounded rear) for those saying what the heck are we talking boats for. Lol

Probably the best forum for big Aluminum boats like in Alaska and for hardcore fisherman has another boat that would be good for your diesel. I was drooling until I saw the 9' beam. 8.5' is the widest you can pull across the USA without special permits.

Of course we're talking boats. After all, this is ExPo and it's a for sale thead. For a boat that already sold...

I saw an all aluminum trawler on the net somewhere, that had an outboard engine recessed into the stern. From the side you couldn't even tell it had an outboard. Can't recall the name though, and naturally it doesn't show up in a search. Not the Nimble Nomad btw.

And yea' that aluminum 33 is just waiting to be someone's pet project. Too bad about the beam though.
