Construction and Specs
I custom ordered this camper in 2013 from a retired Sportsmobile (4x4 off road vans) engineer who designed and built it. It was originally designed to be towed behind a Sportsmobile, however, I’ve been towing it with a Jeep JK. Over the years, I’ve added numerous upgrades to include the awning, aluminum toolbox (with custom stainless steel table), stainless steel headboard, storage drawers, spot/task lights, water system, etc. Due to the fact that my family continues to grow, it’s time to let someone else enjoy this great overlanding platform. Its completed numerous off road tracks to include the White Rim and Alpine trails.
Like most of Expedition Portal members, I’m constantly designing and fabricating upgrades. Prior to this posting, I designed and constructed a mounting plate which will allow a Pelican 1650 case to be mounted to the other fender. The Pelican case can be used for storage, kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies, etc. Once mounted, there will be storage options mounted to both fenders as the other one already has the custom aluminum toolbox. I will include the mounting plate (constructed of HDPE) and directions to the new owner.
The interior of the camper is larger than it looks and can hold a lot of cargo and camping gear. As noted, the three piece mattress stacks up and stores underneath the foot well. Once stacked and out of the way, you can load up the interior and utilize the tie downs for secure transport. You can also leave the mattress in place and place a tarp over it prior to loading your gear. The mattress is very comfortable due to the fact that it is constructed of 3 different layers, all providing a different level of support. The mattress covers can be removed and washed. In addition, the mattress pieces can be configured into a couch which provides a great seating option in the interior of the camper.
Since I purchased the camper in its most basic form, there is no interior lighting. Instead, I just hang my black diamond camping lantern from one of the ceiling mounted d rings. Sleeping inside the camper is very comfortable as the composite construction reduces exterior noises. The Fantastic vent fan operates in both directions and provides a lot of cross ventilation when one or both door windows are open. The blackout curtains add to the privacy and isolation of the interior and quickly roll and store away above the doors.
The exterior galley/storage area includes 2 full extension drawers. Additional storage is available on top of the drawers. The rear galley/storage hatch door is supported by two mechanisms, a supportive aluminum arm and an additional locking extension slide. As noted, the galley/storage area is secured by a locking mechanism when closed.
Future Fabrications:
If I were to keep this camper, my future plans would consist of the following:
Tounge Jack
I recently bent the tongue mounting point (coming off the frame) downward during a recovery. The tongue jack still mounts to it and remains functional, however, I would repair or replace the mounting point. If I were to do it, I would grind off the mounting tube and replace it with the ARC off road trailer jack. If you haven’t seen the ARC wheeled jack, please refer to their website.
Storage Drawers
I built the drawers several years ago out of Baltic birch. They serve their function well and have full extension slides. Instead of using a slam lock (which I later discovered) I used paddle style locks which are not as secure. The paddle locks serve their purpose, however, the right hand side often comes unlatched. More than anything it’s a nuisance, however, if I were to keep the camper I would either replace the front face of the drawers or make completely new drawers using a better locking mechanism. Prior to this posting, I was planning on making a whole new set of drawers out of aluminum extrusions (80/20) which would reduce the camper’s weight and provide a better latch/locking mechanism.
The above mentioned factors are minor and in the hands of any Expedition Portal member, would be corrected or improved to their standards very easily.
Support and Delivery
Depending on where you reside, I’m willing to deliver or meet you halfway for the price of fuel. I’ll also provide all original documentation and my contact information if you need help or support after the purchase. My main goal is to get the camper into the hands of an Expo member!
Additional Info and Photos
Not pictured is the recently installed Shurflo pump, (mounted in the systems area next to the battery charger) water tank and spigot. If you would like additional pictures or information, please feel free to contact me.
Please send me a personal message if you have any questions or would like to make an offer.
