Source for stranded wire?

I get all my electrical wiring and connectors off ebay. it is so much cheaper for same or better quality than anything store bought.

I've yet to find anyplace that can come close on price. I don't have a preferred seller. I just make sure the seller has a good rating and the product is what I want.

Are you suggesting that I should use building wire? In or near the engine compartment of a vehicle? The insulation on THHN is rated for 75C in wet or oily locations, which is 167F. That's lower than the thermostat point on the cooling system, and probably close to the temp on a hot transmission tunnel. It's pretty close to the interior temps on a hot sunny day. Even if it didn't fail outright, the insulation would probably cook off in a matter of months or years.

I wouldn't use building wire like that anywhere on a car, inside or out, for several reasons. If you have some reason for making such a weird suggestion, I'd sure like to hear it.

Why are you in such a snit? How was I supposed to know where you were going to use the wiring? It could have very well been inside a camper shell, as part of an external generator system, or as a solar system. Look at where you posted this question, "Power Systems: 12v, Solar, Gen". The wiring could have easily been 120v or even 240v, that is why I asked.

There are many places in an automobile where high quality THHN, THWN etc is a fine choice. We used to use it extensively when repairing P&H TC 90 truck cranes and FMC Link Belt hydraulic cranes, where it certainly was an improvement on the OEM wires. Many high quality building grade type wires are rated at 90*C also, what is the temperature of these automotive wires?

I was only offering to help, your question seemed rudimentary by your very own phraseology: "8-14ga" , that by itself left a lot to interpretation.

Sorry to embarrass you by calling you out.

You didn't call me out, and you certainly didn't embarrass me. You asked for a source on non-specific wire, to be used in a non-specified application. Like I said, I can't read minds and I certainly had no idea where you were going to use this wire.

As far as what we did at work, they were not on trucks, it was much of the control wiring on large cranes. We were directed to use this wiring by our senior control engineer, who was an EE. None of this wiring was in or on the engine; it was through out the house, sometimes in panduit, sometimes in conduit, and sometimes surface mounted.

But I'm not here to justify anything to you; I was merely trying to ascertain what you were going to use the wire for, so we could help you find the best sources. But you seem hell bent on being combative because I had no idea that this wire was going to be engine compartment mount.

THHN and the like are commonly ran to motors and the such, where vibrations are not unknown. But that doesn't matter; I just asked what you were going to use the wire for.

waytek wire and del city are the best sources I've found. Del City doesn't have minimum order qty's for most of their products, waytek does, but usually has better pricing.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm checking out MarVac today, where I can put my hands on some of the product. When I'm a little less impatient I'll try mail-order.

For what it's worth I just looked up 14ga tinned marine wire at del city and that place I linked earlier. The place I linked was 1/2 the price (assuming there isn't some sort of web glitch). The regular primary wire was priced on par with each other though, not sure what's driving the difference on the tinned stuff. The descriptions are the same. Both UL 1426.
