Speed Graphic on the Mormon Trail

Michael Slade

Untitled
Here are a few shots with the Speed Graphic from a recent trip I did with a youth church group doing a re-enactment on the Mormon Trail. At least one double-exposure...whoops! But, I kind of like it with the 'mistake'. I'll consider it a happy accident.

Ah handcart treks, never got to partisipate in one but they sound interesting. Those pictures are pretty cool. Really like the double exposure.

Love the pictures. We did the Trek with 600 youth. All 4 nights we were at Martins Cove 60-80mph winds and rain came in right around dinner time. We lost over 100 tents to damage and shredding. The last night we sent over 300 kids and leaders to "the Barn" to sleep on the floor since there just weren't any dry tents to put them into. I got pnemonia from being out in the storms tying down Walmart tents. At one point I cam upon a collapse tent with 6 12 yr old boys inside struggling to get out. I simply told them to lie on thier back, grab the top of the tent above them and hold on till the storm was over. Those kids still talk about how cool it was. As we left it started snowing. Wyoming in early June! Lets see more of your pictures.

Love the pix. I can remember usign a Speed Graphic in high school that belonged to the school. No substitute for square inches in format is there? The images have a quality of light, exposure, focus, and focal length that looks very vintage. Somethiing about those old formats just does something special. Very good work!

Good pics, but last time I checked the Pioneers did not have sunglasses. :)

My sister in law and two of her kids I think were part of your group, Vicki, Skyler and Katie Morgan, dont know if you know them.

Cool photos! I have ancestors that were in the Willie and Martin handcart companies.

I wonder how many people would really believe folks could walk from Iowa City to SLC with nothing but a handcart - today - let along in 1856.

A truly amazing story of human faith and perseverance.
