Spotted Nissan Patrol

Patrols did come in a "troopy" version....It is called the high roof or super roof and are generally badged as Safaris. A Safari is a Japanese Patrol.

Not sure why nobody considers importing....importing allows you to get what everybody thinks you can not have. 25yr rule leaves a lot to be desired....can't get a GU like JP has. But every year we are closer to being able to import a GQ (Y60) and eventually a Y61 (GU). Right now you can import the MQ/MK which is the 160 series and Nissans version of the FJ60. They came in many body styles from SWB to LWB to high roof to SWB high roof to a Ute. Diesel, petrol and even autos...all available for import now.

Right man, a friend has just bought here a Patrol Y60 (GR) long wheelbase and high roof, with the TD42T engine, its a 1993 unit. Its a grey import from Japan and where they have to swap the steering wheel to the right side ...

Right , BUT they're still 5dr. Wagons. It's the slab sided 3dr. model I was refering to that Nissan doesn't make a competetor for. For some reason those Safari's/High-roofs always look odd to me, like the rear axle was moved back on accident and never corrected for. Guess it does make for a WAY better dep. angle then in say my 4Runner or a Troupy with their big long overhangs.

And yeah RM&P you of all people can tell us what importing is like. Personaly here in a few years when the models I want come to be plausable I'll start looking downb that road (specificaly for a Turbo-Deisel 70-series Troupy with a Manual and LHD - and lockers while I'm at it eh ;) ) Although I gotta say the GU (???) like yours is one of my favorite looking rigs out there... Not to mention how awesome yours is with the Portals and the built SD33T (I'm a bit of a diesel fanatic could you tell :D )

JVPM (edit - Whoops jPVm) : Your Patrol is awesome too, I love how low the roof-line is on the Patrols, it ind of gives them a "chopped" look somewhat (although I didn't like it as much from the inside, it felt like my old XJ's in terms of the view out and up to trafic lights). Like I said originaly, I'm really sad to hear Nissan threw in the towel on the Patrol and just made it into a big Murano... What was the sence in that???

Dave, you're right about the odd looking rear axle placement on the LWB Y60 ... its 50% an optical issue ,but if you level the front it looks way better. It's I guess a matter of internal space use , better access and shorter overhangs as you say too. There are also many Y60s SWL 2 doors , with the TD42T diesel engine and some with the gasoline in line 6 called TB42

The Y61 (or also called GU like mine) is a bit more correct looking. The Y61 (1998-present) is really what you may find in the USA as the HDJ81. And very close arquitectured too, like coil suspension, soliod front axle (front H233b like RMP's one and rear H260 with LSD). Some came with rear electric locker and double gasoline tank. We have only gasoline models here strangely (4.5 lt (TB45E) and dohc 4.8 lt (TB48DE) models)

This is one I wanted and was sold ... a plain jane 2003 Y61 GL model like mine (mine's 2000 with ther 4.5 lt engine) , but with the 4.8 dohc (vvt) engine (270 Hp), rear electric locker, dual fuel tank, ABS. Not much more , but a real good base to build a great travel rig.

I hope I see them on the road. Leaving today for the Denali Hwy then to Petersville via Trapper Creek Bluegrass fest. Summers here!

Funny... :) We have been in Anchorage a couple of days, but right now we are actually in Girdwood! Are on our way to Seward. We also plan on driving up to Petersville in about a weeks time. Honk if you see us on the road!!

They're all Awesome, BUT 4.8L VVT and an E-locker  bet those are fun. I gues I only ever got to drive a 4.5L Gasser and like I said, it was FUN in the sand (this was near Yepoon on the Central/NE coast of Australia...Such a fun place to wring out a sweet 4wd eh ;) ) The one in the second Pic is just plain gorgeous... I love those Y61's.

Anywho, thanks for the injection of Pics mate, those are some good looking trucks eh. Was the Ford version offered anywhere other then Australia??? I forget what it's called but I didi a few huge double taes in OZ trying to figure out what they were untill someone told me. Name starts out with an M I belive??? Not Maverick but... BAH!!!!!!!!! It's driving me nuts!!!!!!

Right on you got it, it was the Ford Maverick, the guys of Nissan Australia only rebadged the Nissan GR (Y60) to be sold also as Ford Maverick, dunno why. But it was never offered somewhere else.

Yes the E-locker (like the Eaton) was standard equipment on GRX Patrol models. They also came with electrically disengaging front sway bars, 4 wheel discs with ABS, double fuel tank, central cooled armrest, HID lights (hihg/low), front headlight wipers/washers, full leather, double sunroof, LED backlit dashboard instruments , full instruments including digital compass, altimeter, etc. etc. and this was back in 2003 on.

I consider a "troopy" to be a people hauler, especially if it has side facing rear seats. The high roofs in both SWB & LWB fit the bill, to me.

If it must be a 3-door though....here ya go!

I used to dislike the look of MQ/MKs (160 series) and also ALL the highroofs. They have grown on me, I like them ALL now!

Nice looking LWB Safari JP...that is what I want!

I think sway bar disconnector was only for the rear bar. At least that is what I've seen on European models. I have a pic of the thing in my build thred (norwegian text) on this page (scroll down).

Looks like a small hydraulic cylinder (which it is... :) ). I had to make a bracket for it adjusted to my 5 inch lift. Was considering getting a second one and modify the front bar, but they are ridiculusly expencive. Maybe next time!

Sadly the Patrols are remotedly available in the US unless used grey market JDM imports are permitted. Anyways you can have an HDJ80 that ir really almost a twin with the Patrol GU (1988 - 2005).

Spotted UnURBAN heading north with the holiday trafic yesterday on the Seward Hwy near Indian. I hope you had fun down on the peninsula. What great weather.

Had a great time and FANTASTIC weather! Now in Palmer, and we plan to drive over Hatcher Pass and up to Talkeetna during the next couple of days.

If you're in the Talkeetna area take a side trip to Petersville Rd out to Petersville to if you want to get some long dirt roads. It starts in Trapper Creek and heads west. Not much out there but the Dutch Hills, Miners and Bears.

I just spent the last four days driving the Denali Hwy (Hwy 8.) from Paxton to Cantwell and I can report the road was smooth and not all wash-boarded out like it gets latter in the summer. It was dusty and I could have used a Snorkel and prefilter for that drive. Not many campers on the road but the Campground at Tangle Lakes Archeological District was full on Memorial Day. If you're heading north look at Stampede Trail Road north of Denali National Park in Healy and it gets you out to the bus from the movie “Into the Wild”. I don't know what the conditions are like on that road this time of year so some local knowledge may help on that. You don't want to get stuck out there.
