Starting a camper shell project

The truck is called race red. If I go the cheap route it will be black. Just not sure on what sheen. If race red, my buddy owns an auto body shop and would be the price of material and maybe a case of beer. But if going that route I would also get dents out and stuff. Most likely I will not color match.

I have a ford ranger from 02 in whatever they called the brighter red back with a medium grey aluminium cap and it looks damn good

I love those caps, but unless they use the same door size on all of those caps I feel like the door would be way to narrow- but holy green, someone where I live has an extended cab late 90's offroad entirely that color

Yep the door was a bit small. Also just never got around to painting the shell. The cool thing was that the whole back opened.

that I feel like ends up being the only reason those caps end up useable, if they made caps for these with the dual barn doors that maybe had windows and I think it'd be the prefect cap

it's interesting but terrible at the same, I think the only way it works on a cap is if its some truck that looks like a **** box (super petinaud, some paint, probably 80's body) but the driveline is super solid

Yeah, I agree it would look better on a beat up F100. But it could still work. Give it a nice contrast. Maybe. Typically I have no clue what I'm talking about in regards to color-scheme, fashion, and general aesthetics (according to my wife), so don't take what I'm saying seriously. :D

Got the clamps on order for the shell. Thought I had some but no luck finding them. As soon as I get the clamps in it will be on and then all the other stuff can start for the inside.

I'd just paint the cap flat black, or gloss back sprayed from a distance to be matte. I'd paint the roof white or silver though to reduce heat.

I think that is what the plan will be. The black paint that is already on the shell only goes up so far and the roof is the original white. So I plan to tape off the top and leave it white.

Ok. So it looks like the weather is going to be great this weekend ( atleast warm enough to paint at 62). After that the clamps should be in early next week. So I should have a mounted and paint shell by the end of next week.

why not paint it on the sawhorse and skipp taping off the entire truck? plus its at a better height to point paint at

Nice truck and cap. I'm on my second "pickup/cap" rig and have found this choice of truck/cap to be very practical, simple and versatile. Things I have learned:

For a metal cap insulation is very important - even a single layer of Refletex, sections of sleeping pads (the blue cheap ones from Walmart are great for this), carpeting or other similar padding/insulation will help with temperature management and sound deadening.

Add some powered ventilation, such as a roof vent or at least a simple powered fan.

You will need some LED lighting, and think about both internal lighting (general and reading) and some area exterior lighting - very useful at camp, especially at the rear doors.

It is very nice to have at least a minimal "table" set up near the entryway...a portable table or some type of door mounted drop down or slide out work surface that is lighted. Add a portable chair and your set.

I have opted to forgo built in cabinets/platforms as I use my truck for several roles...so I focus on versatility. I sleep on a Roll-a-Cot; this brand cot has no middle leg - so it goes up tight against side bed wall with no conflict with wheel hump, a Thermarest pad and a sleeping bag compete the bed setup. My clothes & gear go in plastic storage bins that are strapped down...dustproof, stackable (inside or outside), mostly weatherproof. I can go from an empty bed cargo mode to fully rigged and loaded for camping in about 20 minutes.

Good luck with your project!
