Steel non-Carb Jerrycans: Big Mouth vs. Small Mouth

So, last month somebody posted about the deal that DeutschOptik had on the steel Jerrycans. I wanted to get a set of 4, but procrasitnated too long. Those were the small mouth cans, and they are sold out. They do still have large mouth cans available. But, apparently there are no large mouth nozzle/spouts available. They say they don't know when or if they will get any more small mouth cans.

So... I'm just curious, are the large mouth cans worth having? The lack of a nozzle is a bit of an issue. Guess I'd have to use a super siphon or a funnel.

Just wondering what people's experience is with these.

Hi Rob,

I've got some Sceptre cans on order at present from DS Tac, wanted to see them first hand before making a final decision on my steel ones. As I'll be carrying them in the back I was thinking they'll not rattle as much and be a 'snug' fit in the rack I'm going to make.

If I go with them, I'll have 4 brand new 20L & 2 10L pre-carb ones for sale. All were from EE.... also got 2 blue water ones.... still in the box.

I might be interested in the 20L gas cans. What kind of timeframe till you decide? We'd have to figure out price... DO is offering 4 of the bigmouth cans for $125, with free shipping, even to Canada. But I imagine I'd get dinged with UPS charges...

Mine showed up via FedEx last year...maybe call DO and find out if you can chose the shipping company to suit your needs? I assume you are referring to UPS's fees related to a border crossing, right?

Might they be able to send them USPS? They aren't that heavy...

I have Wedco NATO gas cans, and have used them with pour spouts as well as a Super Siphon, and I'll say this - I'll never use anything but a Super Siphon again. I'm glad I have the pour spouts as a backup, but it's just way too tedious to sit there holding a heavy gas can when you can start a Super Siphon flowing in a matter of seconds, walk away, and 3 minutes later the can's empty.

How's that Super Siphon work? Doesn't the can have to be higher than the tank the fuel's going into? What do you put it on?

I asked about USPS, but they said it was too big for the 4 pack. FedEx has pretty much the same crappy fees. Yes, it sort of has to do with the border... but really there is no justification. It's just profits.

The super siphon sounds like a good deal, but yeah, you need some vertical height I think. My gas cans will be at about the same height as my filler so... not sure if it would work unless I could jam the tube way down the filler neck?

Another vote for Super siphon.

Yes the can needs to be higher. A lot of guys just leave the can in the bumper rack (obviously the swing out needs to be on the correct side for this to work.)
If you have a roof rack that would work too.

I've set the can on top of a cooler on the tail gate of my Land Cruiser and that worked out pretty well.

More than likely.... shipping stuff in Europe was sooo much cheaper !

New cans are due early next week.... so, will get a beer & decide. Could send via Greyhound... seems the cheapest way. Am 8274 cost me 30 bucks from Vancouver to Revy.... their fairly heavy full of steel rope.
