Storage

I am looking for a storage drawer for the rear of my LJ, I want one to fill the back and be about 6" tall. I have seen several that are too long, too short, not tall enough and too much $$$$. I am not a builder of such things so I have not considered that option. I also need it to be as light as possible as I have so much added weight the poor thing will barely get out of it's own way.
Thanks,
Steve

Tuffy has one but it's 55" long and that's too long, I found another one and it was perfect but it was about $1500. Maybe the only way is to have something built, I know it's not cheap to have someone put it together but it may be worth it so that you can secure items when you are topless.

What size are you looking for, I found a site that has storage drawers that are good looking but they are a few bucks depending upon size. I am thinking of one 48 L X 24 W which is @$ 500.

55" long? I'm not sure what drawer you are looking at, but the Tuffy I put in my LJ isn't that long (but it is higher than you said you were looking for). OffRoadToyStore (no affiliation) seems to kick everyone's butt on Tuffy pricing (I got the drawer, center console and glovebox all for $750 shipped after I called and chatted with them about the size of my order)

Note the adjustable tie-downs and herculiner on the top are my customizations

Not looking at a Tuffy, can't find the size I want. I have a 4 drawer arrangement on the side and I have @24" between that and the other side. I want something about 40" long and 24" wide, I found a 55" long one in Cabelas but it just won't fit as it's just a bit long. I also was checking out sites today and I found the one I described above, I have also been looking at cash drawers for storage of items when I am away from the vehicle.
Thanks for the site, maybe they have something I can use.

I have looked at the issues you face myself and can offer some input......http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4514&highlight=bad+influence

You could have a custom sized box made from a toolbox Mfg, most will do it I asked. I was so impressed by the Partner stove I asked Partner Steel if they would build a 24"x36" sealed aluminum box to bolt between my 36" Accuride slides, they said yea...I am waiting to save the cash now and using the hole as is.....

They make HD slides that mount on the bottom of the drawer. So mounting them on the bottom of a custom size box and to the floor of the Jeep could turn out to be almost a bolt on for you, (other than not drilling into your gas tank). I know your thinking crazy high dollar but those "ready made" drawer systems are still more...$$...

BTW :The drawer will be more useful if in the 8" height range rather than 6", (I raised mine up) most small tool boxes, bags and objects seem to have one side around 8" it is amazing.

So are you getting just the box and no drawer, is it sealed? I like the idea of a custom made storage box, will it come with locks, hoe tall will it be? Are you mounting the box on the slides and then to the floor? If I am not too nosey were they able to give you a ballpark cost of the 36"X 24" box ?
Sorry for all the questions but I am going to put something in soon as I will not need room in the back as my pooch will be soon leaving me..
Thanks for your info and I like all the ideas seen here.

I took a lockable footlocker from Wal-Mart (20 bucks) and a couple bolts from home depot (3 bucks) a bolted it down in the back of my jeep. Included in the home depot run was the eye bolts drilled through the top so i can bungee cord down my chairs/tent. I didn't have money for the tuffy one either, so this will do. Drove through the down pouring rain today in my safari top and it kept out all water. I'm going to silicone everything though.

Funny you should bring the footlocker up, I have the exact same one and use it on my runs, I like how you have mounted it and of course the guard pooch. I am looking for a lower profile arrangement because I always have more junk to put in, seems like the more room I have the more "stuff" I need.. I am torn between making it and buying one and it's not getting any easier to decide. I checked the shipping and it's a killer so maybe my neighbor is going to find himself with a new job..

Partner Steel makes dry boxes for river rafting, they said they would make a 24x36x8 box at a reasonable charge over the standard box. I want the lid hinged on the skinny side and we did not get to a quote.

My box will pull out like a drawer only with a lid, and flat surface. It will have the slides on the side, bolted to custom brackets........It would be easier to use the HD slides that mount on the bottom of drawer or box and bolt them to the floor, (just skip the area on top of the gas tank) 48" slides would work.

WOW, sounds like you have it all sewed up. I think your ideas are great and I will probably copy some, I went out and got some plywood and alumimum "L" pieces and I am going to try to make a box light enough for the rear of the Jeep yet strong and able to hold all I want to shove in it. Also I am gonna lock it up pretty tight as I just can't bring myself to trust some who are out there.
Thanks again.

I did indeed check out the Tuffy you are talking about, just a bit larger than I want. I need something about 24" wide and 40" long, the Tuffy is wide enough that I would have to remove the carpeting to fit it in and besides I have a drawer system in it now. I am looking to have something I can take in and out easily and secure it from those who might want to "borrow" stuff.
I am not much of a wood worker but my neighbor has a table saw and I think I can put something together, time will tell. I sure wish that I had some of the skills that I have seen some people here have.
Thank you for the information..
