Strength of Gen 3 stock spare tire mount

Reactivating an old thread — curious to know what solutions have come up since then. We have a Gen 3 and are looking for cost-effective and safe way to carry a 20 litre jerrycan either on the back door, or mounted to the spare. Commercial solutions are difficult to come by, and I’ve not yet seen an easy or affordable way of solving this problem.
