This is of some interest but their criteria wouldn't necessarily be that of most people here. For me, the VX is tuned counter to my desires. It's off road capabilities are OK but the engine doesn't allow itself to get out of its own way. The ej25 version would be a much better choice. But the only reason I would consider a VX would be because the Renegade would have some major flaw that I couldn't live with. It's far superior in trail hawk trim.

Of course, to consider any of these, I would need to say that the same money for a taco would not be worth it.

Just checked the price, Renegade Trailhawk is ~US$28k. For that kinda dough, there are lots of gently used 4wd vehicles that would bury the Renegade, including many Rubicons. It's only real positive is mpg, 24 combined, when compared to so many others. Jeep/FCA will be selling lots of them, that's for sure, but for this hobby it doesn't add up. And I suppose that goes for the others too.

Thinking about this from a different angle, if I was looking for a DD that I could comfortably take on a dirt road, these CUVs could be a good choice. Different priorities and different ends.

34mpg in an AWD car that has near the clearence of my tacoma ? Where do I put my money ?

I had a 2010 Impreza sport wagon before I got my tacoma where it would go was only limited by two things.

Clearance and no real low range. Point and go. I am sure the cross trex in the same way. With some smart driving and abusive clutch use that thing went were it never should have and did awesome.

None of these other offerings come close to touching this car. Would I buy one in stead of my tacoma ? most likely not. Would I get rid of the 95 4 runner and the carolla that I have for one ? if I had the cash.

My mother inlaw just bought the xv hybrid its power to weight ratio is surprisingly pretty much the same as what it would be with the 2.5L not to mention the electric side adds a bit of kick down low that the 2.5 cant offer. The 2L non hybrid is a tad short in the power for my interest though. For a sub 40k sub compact awd cuv I'm really curious what Mercedes has cooked up for the GLK replacement. If you need seating room etc as mentioned $28'000 clams there are lots of interesting options out there. The baby jeep just doesn't do it for me seems way over priced and I have only seen them in 1%er locations being driven by kids. Which case I'd rather have a GLC with some duel style date material or get dirty light dirt road trippin ability.
oh and I own a Outback but it will probably be our last Subaru, just lacks the style and power I want as I get older, and with all the extra crap Subaru puts on the limiteds they wont be any more reliable than a Mercedes lol.
