Digging the rear seat foldout supports.

I’ve been racking by brain forever about a raising, folding drawer to access the spare. But sometimes simplicity wins, there is just so much usable room for me under a platform to use.

Took my 2018 camping twice so far this year. My fiancée and I have decided that we are going to take a 10 day trip through New Mexico and Colorado in the fall, so we have been testing out new gear and setups at some local spots in central Texas. It’s been a blast and tons of fun to see some beautiful landscapes we haven’t seen before.

Outback is stock except for my 235/65R17 Cooper Discoverer AT4S tires.

I built an insert for the back that had two drawers, one for food and one for cooking supplies (like a stove). It was a trifold design so that our dog could have the back seat while driving. The first fold had little wings that folded out to support it and the second had posts that I would screw in at night (with the front seats adjusted forward for maximum length). I covered most of the surfaces with speaker box fabric. The mattress was a trifold foam mattress that I trimmed a bit to fit nicely.
That's a very cool and clean build. Does your OB have the spare wheel under the floor in the back? If yes, how are you planning on accessing it with the drawers in place? I am asking because I had a similar system in the Toyota Sequoia which I built and really liked. Few months back, I switched to Outback and still struggling with how to add drawers but still be able to access the spare wheel (without moving it to the roof rack or buying a special swing-away carrier of course).

as a general/ overall question, why don't more folks remove their back seats and use that space & weight savings for gear? hidden gear.

small cars aren't going to overland four people are they?

i'm a little out of the loop, and single/ no kids, so i don't know all weigh-in questions "normal" people have to juggle.

thanks

with or without all the folded down seats?

i can see a Civic with one or two peeps and some backpacking gear. but to offset said gear, why not remove the unused seats?

beating a dead horse?

Road tripping, overlanding
I’m a Subi newbie…

Hello Expo Subi pilots,

Long time member here, previous Jeep owner for 10 years and 200,000 miles, and I just replaced my Grand Cherokee with an OB, a 2024 Outback Wilderness. The first thing I did to her was immediately replace the stock tires, 225/65-17 Yokohama Geolandar AT G015s, with up-sized 245/65-17 BFG KO2s. I ran a set of KO2s on the Jeep and found them to be near-indestructible out on the trail. These are the biggest tires that will fit on the stock suspension.

So our OB is our new overlander and I’ll get to adding some accessories to make her more overlanding ready. She is one month old and I just got back from a 4,000 mile shakedown cruise in her, San Francisco to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to Monument Valley to Moab UT and back home. The more I drive her the more I fell in love with her. Decent power, great handling, nice color (I got metallic green), and I really like the fuel economy. My copilot wife really likes her too.

Here are some pictures of her. The water pic is in Death Valley, at Badwater Basin. The yellow circle is mile marker 18. Lake Manly has a lot of water today!

And here is my post over in the Jeep pictures thread, Hello OBW, goodbye Jeep ➜ https://bit.ly/3uDRpeJ

I’ll see y’allz out there on the roads and trails!

Road tripping, overlanding
^^ Did yah make it to Toroweap?
Not this time. I only stopped there for the picture. But I did on my original trip, last October. It’s a fantastic view. Have you been? We enjoyed a picnic lunch there. There’s a table at the overlook.

The trail was fine for the most part. A little bumpy at the end for the last mile or three. Nothing too technical at all.

Here are some pictures.
