Suggestions for Guadalajara area July 20-25

I'm looking some ideas for my upcomming Mexico trip. I leave on July 10th taking the direct interior route to Guanajuato where I'll stay until the 20th. I'll be attending a language school and living in town for just over a week.

Here's where I'm looking for some direction. I'd like to spend the next 4-5 days exploring the area southwest. There are the coloniel inland places like Guadalajara & Morelia and beach cities like Puerto Vallarta & Zihuatanejo. A pretty large chuck of territory, so I need to narrow the scope a bit. Who's spent time in this area? Any particular sites, small towns, activities or camp locations that I need to hit or avoid?

All input is welcome... Thanks!

I do not know if you are interested in the volcano, in Colima they have one and it should be an active one, also here is a link to your route.

Manzanillo is a great place to make a stop on the beach!

. . . speaking of Colima, I met two brothers who were born/raised on Colima. They immigrated to the USA, and opened two mexican restaurants, named Colima's, of all things. Super friendly guys, hard working, and quite successful I might add. I used to frequent the place in Oceanside (CA---just off of what used to be Hill st). Best damn carne asada around...but go hungry...their burritos will put a hurt on you!

OF COURSE I want to see a volcano! Hiking 14,000ft sounds like a cool way to play...

Thanks for the info!
