Hi all!
I have a stock 2021 GMC 3500HD AT4. At the moment, I have a Transferflow 50 gallon in bed auxiliary tank in the bed, an Agricover Adarac Aluminum Series, and a Roofnest Condor 2 XL. Now that we no longer have a 5th wheel and have downsized to something more maneuverable, I'm looking into truck toppers. All of the toppers I've found are not as tall as I'd like. I'm trying to find something that's a "Deuce and a half" style topper that my two kids can sleep in, and my wife and I can sleep in the tent.

I have the following requirements, feedback and input would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Ideally, I'd like something that's 2 1/2' or so higher than my bed rails.
  2. Made of aluminum or something composite. NOT a fiberglass topper
  3. Supports > 700 lbs on the roof when stationary, and at least 400 lbs off roading
  4. Driver's side opens so I can continue to use my in bed auxiliary tank

So far, the only thing I've found that even comes are the AT Overland topper and the Dirtbox topper. The RSI is a no go for me since it's in multiple pieces and I've seen several videos of folks having theirs come apart on rough roads.

Any other suggestions?

Def function following form there. Looks like Elon Musk designed a goiter for a truck...

I had to look that up to make sure it was an actual product.

Thanks for the suggestions all! Of all the suggestions, I like the Alucab mod cap. It would seem I can easily sleep my wife and I as well as both kiddos (5-7) in the Kind Size bed.

The biggest issue I have now with the Condor XL is that it's extremely tight with all 4 of us. Plus, kids roll around, so it'd be nice to sleep separately below ;-p

I should also mention I'm trying to do this on the cheap! I'm not sure I'd like to buy something completely new, rather figure out a system with what I already have. At the moment, I'm considering using my flated topper under the rack, or buying a custom tarp and a mosquito net.

If you want to go cheaper, what about just getting a ground tent?

My eldest daughter and her boyfriend go off grid camping in his Colorado and they have a pretty nice tent set up.

Truck looks different now. He's added a winch and a rack with a PVC water storage setup.

They bring a big air mattress, etc... The thing is almost as big as the bed in our bedroom at home, lol
