NOPEC, I LOVED the Terror, both the novel and the show! Such a great mashup of history/folklore and I'm a huge Jared Harris fan. Everything he touches is gold. Not unexpected being Richard Harris's son. I've had The Abdominal on my list for some time. With the weather turning, seems like now is the time.

One of my favorite elements of these legendary arctic tales is the crafts themselves. Franklin and Crozier's HMS Terror and HMS Erebus were repurposed fortified royal gunships. In their previous life they were both involved with the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the Battle of Baltimore. Francis Scott Key wrote a pretty catchy tune about that one!

Truly enjoying you trip report. Exactly what I come here for.

I knew that history of the ships a bit. I do recall that tune, BTW.....

Nothing like 12 inches of re-enforced oak to take on ice, prior to steel or the more exotic hulls these days.

Two of the guys I did the King William Island quadding trip with are fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS) and my partner and I are involved with them as well. We were sponsored by them for a long paddling expedition this summer (soon to be reported here on ExPo). I think because Jared Harris did such a great job with the Crozier character, the RCGS wanted to acknowledge him. Absolutely amazing. What an experience! I hope to be able to get into the Arctic in the coming years. Got a couple heavy work years then hopefully north. For now I'll live vicariously through you!

Well that is high praise thanks. The true north it is every bit as amazing as you are imagining. You'll get there.

And by the way I forgot in my last post that I was going to apologized on behalf of all of us British North Americans for putting a bunch of holes in Ft. McHenry and your flag as well back then. Bad form.... But, there might just have been some justice when the two "culprit" vessels were squished in the ice 35 years later, in our own backyard......
