Supercharged Tacoma opinions

You can get them (for the 3.4ltr) for a lot less than $3K. About half that on eBay NIB, which is about what a decent RTT or custom bumper would run.

Regarding the OP's inquiry whether buying a used vehicle with a SC is risky business, a VIN# run at your local Toyota dealership can tell you if it was installed at a dealership, which often will include a warranty.

Be wary of urban web myths... I see more happy SC owners & users here chiming in, than unhappy SC owners. Even if it's just a few of us, that's still more than any owner relating a bad experience.

A TRD SC is the safest bet if you want to get a SC for you Toyota. If you need to power to pull heavy load but don't want to get a full size truck SC is a good way to do it. I'm not sure what pressure the TRD SC for 3.4l is set at but for 05+ it's set at 5-6psi. That's a very low boost I just don't see that will hurt the durability of the engine. On top of that, TRD has all the access to Toyota's internal spec on the engine they are at the best position to develop a reliable product for it.

BTW, I really like my SC!

i remember an episode of extreme 4x4 on the powerblock a while back where a competition rock crawler guy had a jeep liberty style chassis and a supercharged 3.4 liter powering it- i thought it was a pretty interesting testament to the advantages of this setup.

For those that think this a large expense, might have been right 3 years ago, but now a days especially with the economy you can pick them up at great prices if you have cash. For example, I picked mine up on craigslist for a 1000, 2 weeks ago, as far as the buying used goes, these are pretty much all mechanical internally, very little could go wrong, and they sell bearing rebuild kits fairly cheap, just check to see if it has oil in it before you run it. And I also picked up a 7th injector kit from URD for another 1000. So for roughly 2000 you can add about 70-80 hp to your rig. In my opinion thats pretty good hp to $ ratio. And that is safe hp, that wont jeopordize realibility and in some cases even warranty. As far as the new tacomas go, yea those will cost your your first born, but in a few years they will also litter the forums.

I originally asked because I have seen some Tacos ('01-'04) with the TRD installed that are offered for roughly the same price as those without. I guess you really don't recoup your investment, but get to have fun while it lasts.

Thanks for all of the replies- you guys are great.

Yes, it is like with all mods that you do...they do not really add any "value" to the vehicle that is why you see all these parts on sale, most of the time you will make more money parting out the mods rather then selling it on the vehicle.

So if you plan to heavily mod your truck, plan on keeping it forever, because you will never recoup your "investment"
