Suspension choice with Overload springs / shocks..

Hey guys,

Im in the begin stages of swapping a om617 into a D1 and ive hit a small wall that i wont need to deal with for a long time But i would like to plan ahead to avoid future head achs.:smiley_drive:

wiki says that a stock rover 3.5l long block dry weights 375 lb and in sure the 3.9 isent to far away. Now im not sure if that includes the accessories or not.. Now the OM617 weights in around 570LBS wet.

Thats around 195LBS different in the motor bay alone :Wow1:

With the additional weight of a RTT, extra fuel, Water tanks, our kitchen and other camping gear , we will be rather bloated. We will shave off any excess weight we can but the 195LBS up front isent changing!

Will the OME shocks support the extra weight? Can they valve shocks for additional weight? Or should i be looking into a semi custom coil-over setup? We wont be pushing the limits of the truck, but we due intend on going off the beaten path alittle.

I really want to stay away from air assist/ air bags.

Thanks for the help guys:coffee:

I don't recall the #, but OME has an XHD I used on my heavily laden 130-heavy bumper w/8274, tire on hood, 300Tdi, etc and also used when we did a 4.3 SBC in a 90- worked fine in both applications. Not everyone will carry it, but Bill @GBR does and can tell you the # as he gave me the ones for my 130 he was going to use on his. Hope this helps

You should just plan on getting SPRINGS rated for a heavier load. The OME XHD or the RTE 2" should both work well.

OME 766 springs in front. I have them in the front of my d1 with the 300tdi, winch bumper, and winch, and they are very sturdy springs.

I have had the om617 sitting in my D1 for a while now. Its just in the shop on the old stock springs. It sags a bit, so I ordered the OME Heavy duty spring kit to swap in. have not got around to swapping them in yet want to get the truck running first.

Yes ive seen your posts on Pirat4x4, im also Mtouring there to!

So your truck's old OEM springs are just sagging with the extra weight, thats not to bad i was just worried that motor + the extra's would overload a upgraded set up... but it sounds like im just over thinking it!

Have you posted up photos yet?

My springs now are just factory stock springs and sag a bit with the weight of the diesel. I have not installed the OME heavy duty springs yet. But once i do I'll post up some before and after pics.
Cheers
