Tacoma AT or MT?

My '97 Jeep Cherokee would not start by popping the clutch when the battery was dead.

It's a jeep thing that I don't understand. My 98 XJ will not pop start even with a fresh bat. The computer must not give it any fuel cause it will just turn over and over down the hill but will not start. My 87 was not a problem so it's a penta star thing too.
