Tacoma - Budbuilt front skidplate

If the Fram product suits your fancy, I'd highly recommend one of the Fumoto drain valves, distributed through these guys. I believe the correct part number for the 3.4L is the F-103 or F-103N.

The (slow) flow leaves something to be desired, but I'm able to get my engine oil to full operating temperature and, with a pair of finger-padded gloves, flick open the valve and start draining immediately; no waiting to cool down. The F-103N has a hose nipple, so you can also route a piece of rubber fuel line directly into your favorite used oil container with no mess.

Any photos of the remote oil filter setup?

I have a Fumoto on the Tacoma and on the 4Runner as well. The part number with the N has a nipple on it so that a hose can be connected to it. The slow draining gives you time to take the tires of for rotation, brake inspection and to take the splash guard off to access the oil filter. Not really a problem. I like them and have had no troubles. I have a short piece of hose with a rubber stopper to keep any dirt out of the valve. Best part is not having to take off the skids (the ones on the Tacoma has stripped bolts). I use a few rags under the filter and a cut off bottom of an oil container with a rag in it to drop the filter into, usually fairly clean.

I found a coupon code for 10% off your total order at quickoildrainvalve.com. The code is YM4. It only saved me $2.60 off my order but that covered shipping.

Another plug for Bud and his skids, both are terrific!

I prefer this oil drain system.

I have been using one on my F350 for about 11-years, one on the 4Runner for 2+ years. Feed it up through the (small) oil draining hole in the skid with the tube hanging down below the skid - draining into the drain pan. Very clean and possibly less chance of the valve opening when the drain tube is not screwed on.

Bump. I need to do something different with my drain plug. Pulling the skids each time is becoming a bit of a hassle to say the least.

Did anyone end up with the Fram unit? Leaks? Easy enough to screw the hose on through the BudBuilt hole? What about the Fumoto? Easy to get your hand in on the valve lever?

I'm pulling my entire skid setup in the coming month for my 90k service (trans and timing belt), figure it would be the opportune time to swap the drain plug.

As I previously posted, the Fram works well. Does not leak. I've had it installed for about 5 years now.

The filter mess is the problem I still have with leaving the skid on. The 5 minutes to remove the skid is better than having the oil & crap eternally drip out the back of the skid if I leave it installed.

My issue as well. I need to pull my front skid to get to let the (V8) oil filter drain.

I think I came to this realization yesterday. I was able to get a small funnel into the drain hole in the plate and even get a socket with extension through the middle to remove the drain plug. It drained nice and clean with just a couple of rogue drops right as I was pulling the socket out (covered with oil but no biggy). However as mentioned I still made a mess with the oil filter. I did my best to catch as much as I could with a rag, but enough slipped through that I ended up yanking the skid anyway. I've got a trans jack that makes a one man job out of the project. It worked out anyway, I'm coming close to my 90k service so I might as well leave it off until my timing belt and trans drain/flush/fill are done.

I finally put my bud built on last week, went on easy for a slightly used piece. I did use a hole saw to make an lager hole in the skid so I could easily access the Fumoto valve without any issues, I have a hose on it so it does not drop on the skid. I also remember seeing a picture, not sure if it was here where someone used a paper towel roll taped to the skid plate to keep the oil contained, much like your funnel. The filter I can do fairly cleanly, I put a rag down and make sure its tucked in close to the block, I then have about a 3" bottom of a quart oil container cut off that I stick in under the filter with a paper towel inside, this is where I drop the filter when I remove it. Then I can pull the container out with the filter in it. Works pretty good.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but I just ordered a Fumoto valve and this coupon code is still good!
