Tacoma vs Silverado/Sierra 1500

Already posted in Fireside, posting up here in the Toyota section out of curiosity...

Oh noes, not another vehicle comparison thread! Apple to Bigger Apple comparison, since the Tacoma is no longer "mini" and gets darn near the
same mpg as a Silverado 1500.

Went and test drove a bunch of new trucks recently, the Tundra, F150 (5.4 and Eco-Boost), and the Colorado didn't make the cut. I don't
care for Nissan or Dodge, so I didn't (or won't) look at them.

The Taco and the Silvy made the cut, both get the same mpg, but the Chevy has more capacity, and more power...gets a ding for
no manual trans option, but I think I can get over it. And *gasp* I think I am leaning towards the Silverado, since it
is bigger...that means it will haul gear better. FlipPac is in the plans as well.

Both trucks have mechanical "issues" that can be dealt with imo, don't care about resale value either.
Girlfriend says stay with Toyota, but I dunno...can't make up mind.

Tacoma Access Cab SR5

4.0-liter V6, 236 hp, 266 lb.-ft.
4WD
Manual trans.
Payload 1425
Trailering 6500 (Toyota's website says 3500 though)

Chevy Silverado Extra Cab Standard Bed Work Truck

V8 5.3, 315hp, 335 lb.-ft.
4WD
Auto
Payload 1513
Trailering 6500

Option of Max Trailering package with the 6.2 (gets a ding for mpg, don't really need it either)
403 hp, 417 lb.-ft. of torque.
Payload: 1,908 lbs.
Trailering 10,700
Can't find a picture of an extra cab Silverado FlipPac combo this will have to do.

This is coming from my personal experience as I own a Silverado currently that I will be getting rid of in favour of a Tacoma this upcoming Spring. I have been a Chevy guy when it comes to trucks always and I still do love the brand.

I would definatly say Tacoma, for a payload difference of 88lbs does it really matter? The Tacoma in the long run will be more reliable and have less issues, again not that Silverado's are bad trucks I own one but its proven. I know resale you say doesnt mean anything to you but if the time ever did come up unforseen that you did have to sell it for whatever reason the Tacoma has probably the best resale value when it come to trucks in general,Ive done the comparison minus Diesels as its apples and oranges.

Both have similar towing capacities, why if you dont mind me asking are you only interested in an Access Cab and not a 4dr with 6ft box? The Access Cab's are great with the 6spd manual but I'm just wondering as the 4dr's have a ton of room in them. The 4.0L is a great motor, I know they might be rated similar in Fuel Economy but you will get better with the Tacoma as my Chevy is a pig.

Now if your planning to put aftermarket on the truck at all the Tacoma is leaps and bounds ahead of the Silverado in that aspect. The aftermarket support can't be compared between the two, the Silverado does have good options for lift kits but most are geared towards mall crawlers.

Ive done a ton of reading up on this, spoke to co-workers about the Tacoma's who own and have owned them and went and looked at tons of trucks at local dealers. Like I said Ive been a Chevy truck guys always so Ive done my research and the Tacoma in my opinion is a very reliable truck that has a great build quality and great reputation.

Also the Tacoma's 4wd is IMO stronger than the Silverado. With the Rear Locking Diff Feature on the TRD's its a great option for back country travels along with Downhill Assist Control. Lockers are readily available for front and back also, there are options for the Silverador but there are A LOT more options with the Tacoma.

Dont know if that helped but I was in a similar situation and my decision ended with 100% Tacoma. In the end its all about what your going to do with the truck. If you dont need a fullsize dont get one, the new Tacomas are basically a fullsize truck these days anyways. You can tow with them easily, my cousin transports his fullsize ATV in his all the time, loads of wood etc.... There tough trucks, a little more expensive than the Chevy but I think its about overall build quality.

I already own a 1st gen. Tacoma Exrta Cab already BTW.

Have a few dirt bike buddies with Silverados that will get 20 mpg, no problem, my Taco averages 18 on a good day. Gas mileage isn't a huge thing for me though.Resale isn't too much of a concern, I keep vehicles for a very long time, I'll probably hang on to my current Taco as well. More about what will work the best for what I need, the resale value between the two is chicken scratch, really...

Do not need a Crew Cab, no kids...never will have them either. ;) Have no interest in the DC/6' bed Taco, the Extra Cab GM has more legroom of 34" to the DC Taco's 32", not that it matters much, since humans will rarely travel back there. (Wheelbase is nearly the same, DC Taco long bed 140" GM EC SB 143") An Extra Cab is all we need, those jump seats will be removed, and replaced with a platform for my dog on one side and storage drawers on the other. That and, after much hemming and hawing over just about every cab figuration & bed length. I just really like the layout of an Extra Cab with a 6' bed. The 6.5' bed on the GM is a nice bonus. The 5 footer stumpy bed on the crew cab, won't cut it for sleeping in bed if needed. [read] weather too stormy for deployment of the FlipPac or stealth camping.

There are "correct" suspension systems for GM's, just have to look.

BMS has a 4WD LT and a Mid Travel kit.

Mazzulla has a mid travel kit for the 4WD's

Total Chaos has UCA's as well.

This is about the ride height I am going for, if I go with a GM. Most likely do a BMS or a Mazzulla mid travel kit.

I am hearing the same about the late model GM's being just as or even more reliable than Toyota. I dunno, I have been a loyal Toyota "guy"
for 25+ years now...getting a bit bored, and want to try something else. The little bit of extra room in the Silverado over the Taco AC looks like it will work
better for dirt bike gear bags, and camping equipment.

I say Tacoma for the offroad capabilities, nimbleness, and better looks.

Unless your GF is also your cousin. Then get the dumbestic.

I would say Silverado if you're keeping your other Tacoma. I like them both, and have both in my work fleet. The Tacoma handles better off road, and the chevy's seem to go in the shop more often for little things. If handling and reliability aren't the key factors, go for power, room and comfort!
