Taking diesel converted Rover out of the country

LOL, try driving a DI with no sway bars, detroit in the rear and TT in the front, in the snow. You don't know nervous!

Speaking of sway bars . . . I'm thinking of taking them off my D1 when I install the OME springs. I originally wasn't going to do this for stability on the road, but since I've bought my RRC, I've rethought it. It never came with sway bars and it drives just fine. It's very softly sprung as well. Do you think the D1 would drive similarly to the RRC without them, or will the added height make it feel more tippy?

I would find it hard to believe that the EPA is going to go after vehicles and engines that are tagged and operating...

I will agree with the fact that it is getting hard to get the engines, but there are ways around everything...and don't start preaching about legality, this has been going on long before you decided to buy a rover and will continue long after you fade away...

In your case, it's a 96, so it has to meet OBD2 reg's, so your basically screwd if you want to keep the swap to the letter of the law.

Your question about the engine and OBD2 compliance shows you've done ZERO research on this as that would have been the first problem that you would have discovered about the "LEGALITY" of this...not whether or you can drive or export it

I've done zero research on the OBD II thing because there are no emissions checks where I live, so that's not any issue for me. Like I said in a post above, I don't even have cats on my truck, so I'm already illegal if I have to get it inspected someday. I was just curious what the situation in VA was . . .

so your making all this noise about the legality of engine swaps and you don't have cat's on your truck...

does anybody else see the the irony in this

The DI and RRC are completely different trucks and will drive completely different as well.

My rangie had 3in RTE springs, OME shocks with F/R RTE links/arms and it drove like a stock street queen. My DI has the exact same set up (literally) and without sways it's a bit tippy on the freeway, with two pelican 1650's, gas etc. However, the front TT keeps it straight as it naturally pulls the wheel to the center.

Depending on your intentions, I would just keep the sways on. Unless you're going for sexy flexy suspension, you may not miss the added drop that the sways inhibit.

The original question wasn't about the legality of doing this for driving in the US, it was whether there was anyone who had had problems taking their diesel converted Rover out of the country and then getting it back in through the customs inspection. That has been answered. If I take my Disco out of the country without cats, that won't be a problem, because the EPA actually recommends removing the cats when you are taking the vehicle into an area where poor fuel might damage them, and then reinstalling them when you get back. You just have to get permission from them before you do it. Here in the country I also run the same risk of getting fined for having a modified emissions system, as someone who has swapped an engine or something. But, like people have said, the chances of getting caught in the US are not that great if you don't have to have your vehicle inspected. I'm only driving without them now because that's the way the vehicle was when I bought it and I haven't installed replacements. I am planning on reinstalling cats at some time in the future, since I would prefer to have them on.

Just here...

Im close. 4" lift, no sways, Fox shocks, Detroit rear, and 3 link front. Thought about a TT in the front but its my DD and I thought that would be a little much. Crosswinds are a bit interesting...

One thing that indicated the GF was a keeper was when we were driving around and she shut the radio off. I asked why and she said she would rather just listen to the Flowmaster. With a diesel, Ill lose the rumble but whatever.

I never said it was nervous, or a problem for me. It's my wife. She wasn't gifted with a lot of driving skill. I can't deny it.

You need to find the video of... what the heck was it. Daur 4x4 or something. This orange 110 TD5 in Germany, totally uncorked, sounds pretty good.

My wife isn't allowed to drive my track car. Way too oversteery. Gotta keep it straight with a bootful of throttle. :) Actually, nobody can drive my car but 2 of my other friends. One of them has a mint ITR as collateral. ;)

And I'm VERY nervous with the truck after I lifted it. Though she has in a pinch.

Rob, she drove the S2000, the power isnt that high(sub400), its the short wheelbase combined with the power and the weight that makes it tough.

As for the truck lift, mine is over 3", keep the front swaybar connected and you will be ok. I need to reconnect mine.

I thought later 300TDi's had some sort of computer that monitored a few things and had an OBD connector? If one installed a later engine, with an OBD port that could be queried...

<ducks>

I just took the CEL bulb out of my car, and that's good enough up here.

My rig has an OBD2 port on the seatbox under the front edge of the cubby box. I had Keith @ Rovertracks Nanocom for a week or so and meant to plug the laptop into my truck and see what I could see, but the Td5 I was working on took precedence and then a couple of guys from England came and stayed for 6 days and I forgot all about it. The later 300's have a few more sensors and a computer of sorts also under the cubby box which controls the egr valve. The egr and cat have been removed by leprechauns on my truck so I'm sure the obd2 port would be throwing all kinds of codes.
