TDI swap

4BT is not a good match for a road vehicle IMO. Too much vibration and noise.

Isuzu or Mercedes or ChryCo/VMMotori (distant third) would be my short list.

and I have read more than one source about their tendancy to blow up into tiny little pieces.

Plenty of those engines on the road with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. The rest of the world thinks it's the best engine on the road. Of course, stock engines are the ones racking up 200-400k miles. All bets are off if you try to bump it from 130hp to 500hp. In pretty much any engine, when you start getting outside of the design parameters, you are more likely to have a grenade on your hand.

The mechanical TDi would be my first choice for a swap in many vehicles. I'd use mostly stock parts. I would never mate it to an AT though, especially not in a heavier vehicle.

Any swap project is a huge endeavor and will cost a lot. It's always cheaper to just rebuild what you have. If you think it isn't your cup of tea, then it isn't.

throw some fuel into the conversation...

how about 1KZ-t engine from Toyota? with mechanical pump they say its one of the best swaps you can do to any overland vehicle.

Even Nissan Patrol guys seem to agree on that...

Look into the MWM 4.07 engine from south america if you want about the perfect power/weight/package. It will just make you angry that we don't get more diesel choices in the USA :)

The 4bt is still a LARGE HEAVY engine. It may be two cylinders shorter from to back than the 6bt, but its still a VERY tall engine top to bottom. Even the 4bt is about 750-800lbs ready to go.

I think the 4bt is more suited to repower a full size US pickup than a jeep. I'm not saying it can't be done, but gees that is 10lbs of something in a 5lb sack!

I love my 6bt in the dodge, some days I wished it just had the 4bt....

Boy oh boy do I wish we got diesel engine choices like the rest of the world!
