Tell me opinions on this canvas topper...

thinking about it for my MJ:

do you think it would look right in my jeep? I am thinking it would look a little silly since my truck is pretty much stock. But I am really getting tired of not having any dry storage...its either this or a nice low profile/straight chest tool box. Some of the nicer tool boxes are in the $300-400 range and for $600 I could have this unit, seems a lot more useful than just a box for the money. I dunno just looking for opinions...thanks :coffeedrink:

Personally I think it will look better on your truck than that "beater" in the picture.

You'll have good contrast with the dark grey/black adjacent the white.

I've been casually looking at these. Isn't the Canback a little taller? It's also quite a bit more expensive. :(

I really like the idea of one of these with the ability to roll up the sides. Is this model set up for that?

^yes click on the link above the first pic and look around on their site. Its only $598 with only $32 shipped (cont US)
One thing I don't like is their support structure really doesn't offer much side access.
But you can fold it down completely w/o removing the topper, something can-back can't offer...soooo

also. to my knowledge, can-back doesn't build a model specifically for the MJ

they probably do, but can-back is out...just cant afford something like that.

got any pics of your MJ?

Ive got most of the parts collected to do a 3" lift. I still need rear leaves, rear Bilstiens, and an adjustable track bar...I am thinking about selling all that and going straight to a 4" LA or 4 link in the front and SOA in the rear with explorer springs to keep it low. I also want to re-gear from 3:55's to 4:10's w/ ARB's.

How about a Topper like what Mario from Adventure Trailers has on his MJ? Your rig would be PERFECT for it!

Not much to see of my MJ (can find it from main page of my web site in my sig). It's a project vehicle waiting its turn in the queue. Plan is to build it more or less the same as the XJ... including new style fenders, dash, etc.

I've got a Can-Back, really like it, but all the thread that keeps it together went South and it came apart. Called them and they informed me the company I bought it from no longer existed, they were a new version. OK, understand that, could they sew it back together for money? Nope, some place off site does their sewing. OK, took it down the street and an upholstery shop put it back together for me. Not sure I'd buy from them again.

how's it going Justin? I think it would look good on your MJ, I like the aev wheels too. what are your plans for the rig?

My two cents

FWIW, I'm looking at softopper vs bestop(/supertop) vs can-back right now and reading on mutliple forums (here, tacomaworld, toyotanation etc) and this is the third thread I found where the can-back comes apart at the seams or has weathering damage sufficient to require repair. None for the softtopper or bestop(/supertop).

The pros/cons for each are defenitely there, I see them as follow:

Can-back: pos: can take loads, RTT etc, sturdy construction, access to sides easily. negs: seems to be not robust enough for the price, poor commitment from manufacturer, has a new owner, relocated business, (website looks unprofessional, but hey, they sell soft tops, not laptops, but still... makes me wonder)
Bestop: pos price affordable, access to sides easier than softopper, has side windows cons: need to stow side windows and rear window "somewhere", more laborious rig down that softopper, can't take loads
Softopper: pos price affordable, sleek design rig up/rig down, apparent ownership committment/communication best of the three companies, no complaints on wear and tear online cons: poor access to sides, cant take loads, no side windows for Tacoma models, some think the amount of side supports are just not "clean" enough in terms of looks.

My choice? I'm going with softopper. If something breaks I'll keep them honest, I don't need to load stuff on top (have a nice camping trailer with RTT for that) and I am price conscious. I am not paying double for something that could wear and tear, ultimately making the entire thing (while sturdy and beautiful robust design) relatively useless until you pay MORe money to get it fixed. I am not going for bestop since I won't have places to lay down the sides and back when I need to do so, eventually, I can just see it happen, plus my dog doesnt really need to see out the sides, he gets enough action when we get to the destination and he can always look out the back :p

Just my 5 cents, but maybe useful for someone else who is looking at the options sometime in the future.

What's more is that Softopper sells a rack system that will work with their tops if you want to go that route. I thought seriously about them too but went with a Snugtop instead.

Anyone looking to store plastic windows could always use one of the variety of Jeep window rolls offered.

They are like pages of a book, with soft material as the pages. Place a window in between pages and when all of the windows are between pages roll the thing up. Most have some velcro or fastex straps so the can hang from a support and out of the way.

I believe a couple different sizes are available to accomodate longer or shorter windows.
