Tell Me Why I Shouldn't Buy a WK CRD!

I wish there was a plastic replacement tank for the WK...would remove the rust issue and save a couple of pounds.

I found other references to this issue on the webz. I told the guy I wasn't interested in driving 6 hrs to pay full book on a vehicle that may have a serious hidden problem. It's all been texts and he didn't counter with anything so I'm guessing this may be a dead deal.

I guarantee the Ford dealer is not going to touch that potential issue with a 10ft pole...if ain't leaking it must be ok is there mentality. There is a good chance that it is ok, but some of the guys running CRDs in Canada have taken a beaten. It is a relatively easy fix to repair the tank and once it is repaired properly it will function perfectly for years to come. It was just a poor design....so I guess that is one bad thing about the CRDs running in cold weather climates.

Yeah, they could've counter with a lower price though. They've only had it listed for 4 days so there's no desperation on their part. They will probably find someone who will pay their price. It's a good looking vehicle with under 100k miles

They are not for everyone, but it is cool have the diesel and showing up to an Expo event in something other than a 4Runner or a Wrangler...:wings:

That being said when my CRD dies I will move over to a 4Runner or a Wrangler...:smiley_drive:

Why does living in VA equal a rusty tank?

Salty roads, rustable tank material, and all the service done close to the beach. Salt was a big part of this vehicles life and I can't vouch that the previous owners rinsed the skid plate out after driving though it all. Not worth the drive and full book price. If it was closer and cheaper, might be worth the gamble.

The 4Runner is fine for now. Remember, this thread is about why NOT to buy.

The single biggest reason not to buy this vehicle is because you secretly lust for an AEV loaded Prospector.
Indulge your dream before it becomes just another fantasy.

Mortgage the house, sell the kids, get the truck... ;)

They want $11K for it. I could spend $11K on my 4Runner somehow and it would be pretty cool.

I know you have decided to pass on the WK, but I will help you solidify that decision. I don't think the diesel is any reason to stay away as much as the WK platform itself is.

I am an admitted Jeep fan. I grew up with them, I have several, my folks had Jeeps growing up and even my grandfather grew up working on their Willys. A few years ago my wife and I bought a like new, one owner 06 with QDII and Hemi. It seemed like the perfect on/off road compromise Jeep.

I think the excitement of a like new Jeep with a Hemi clouded my impression. The leather seats were rock hard and uncomfortable on long drives, there was absolutely no storage space in the interior (even for every day stuff), the interior finish felt cheap and the blind spots created by the A and B pillars were unnecessary. It sat so low I had to jack it up to change the oil, I had to put two radiators in it and the doors creaked and popped when off the pavement. The final straw was the transfercase shift recall that put the WK at the dealer service center a lot. After the recall it wouldn't go into low range. I don't remember how many times it went in for the issue, but the dealer replaced the actuator a few times, did wiring harness work and even some programing. In October of '15 we took the WK to Ouray and 4low failed again. It was sold in November with 84k miles and was replaced with a 100 series cruiser.

Lame.

I did have concerns, I never owned a 4x4 that didn't have levers connected to the t-case, it did worry me if they ever failed to engage or to disengage. In this case, it was a purely emotional decision... customers who make emotional buying decisions are the best kind of customers. It's actually the salesman who passed on the deal. When I expressed concern about the possible hidden problem he could've said "I'll have the service dept drop the skid and I text you a pic of the tank" or "I'll ask the boss if we can do anything on the price". It was just no more contact... which is really the worst thing to do.

Sooo... another one popped up in my area. This one claims to have a rebuilt turbo, and new "front joints". It already has a 4" lift, an offroad bumper of non-ARB origin (gasp) and a "warren" winch. It's listed by a female and the few pics posted seems to have been well taken care of cosmetically. I don't so much mind the asking price, but it does have rather high mileage at 197k.

That's the same mileage my 4Runner had on the clock when I purchased it at 14 years of age, but it's not such a complicated vehicle. Any feedback at this high of miles? It's more than double the miles of the other one the dealer wouldn't sell to me.

I am assuming it has the JBA ( :/ ) lift which is pricey at $4k, because the seller claims the lift was $4K. What would you pay? Or would you walk away?

Mine has right at 145, 50 of that is with me behind the wheel. Only real age issue I have seen is the trans started shifting bad when the filter got clogged. I was halfway between the two service intervals so it wasnt unexpected.

I think the engine and trans would have no issues with 300k *with proper maintenance* that high and I would have someone go over it really well, preferably a Mercedes dealer or shop that specializes in sprinter vans. If you know someone who owns one and can test drive as a comparison that would be good also.
