Tell Me Why I Shouldn't Buy a WK CRD!

Mine has right at 145, 50 of that is with me behind the wheel. Only real age issue I have seen is the trans started shifting bad when the filter got clogged. I was halfway between the two service intervals so it wasnt unexpected.

I think the engine and trans would have no issues with 300k *with proper maintenance* that high and I would have someone go over it really well, preferably a Mercedes dealer or shop that specializes in sprinter vans. If you know someone who owns one and can test drive as a comparison that would be good also.

I just seems that each one in the country listed for sale is just under 100K so this is double everything I've seen so I was concerned. That and I generally try to stay away for offroad vehicles with offroad mods. This vehicle is very expensive to lift so I'm thinking about making an exception here.

It does have horrible mall-crawly wheels though

I just heard back from the seller, the woman is selling the Jeep for her father, not sure the story there... maybe it's an estate thing.

This one fell through as well, keep in mind that it would be a 6 hour round trip to see this thing. I noticed that there were two open recalls on this vehicle. When I inquired why they weren't taken care of, I was told they had no intention of taking care of them, oh and by the way, the check engine light is on all the time because we cut the cat off to get better MPGs. Pass.

I have 2 open campaigns as well and I have no intentions of getting them done. There are a number of stories about Chrysler screwing them up. In one the campaigns it may make your 4Lo inoperable.

Yes, but I'm not staring at a check engine light because someone cut off the cat.

This one was $9k and already had all the mods done I'd do. The too good to be true warning flags:

No CarFax offered
Daughter selling the truck for dad who was too busy to field questions.
When I asked for service records, I got the phone # for their mechanic
Dad doesn't remember the brand of the $4k lift he installed
Dad doesn't remember who makes the bumper
I was going to go look at it this Sunday and my final question before I left was going to be: are there any check engine lights?

I would've been so pissed if I went out there and got an "oh by the way.."

Purchased a '08 North Edition used and drove for 4 years and 160,000 miles. Outside of normal mtc. such as oil/filter/air cleaner/tires/brakes, the only 2 issues I saw were an intermittent failure of the crank position sensor(which caused a misfire idle) and a failed #6 glow plug(needs a 11mm deep 1/4" socket to fix). Beyond that, the Mercedes CRD powered vehicle was fantastic. The transmission was very stout, but needed an additional gear as the 5-speed had the engine running 2100rpm @ 70mph(3.73 gears were standard). The swirl motor was a known failure point, and eventually would fail(the resulting fix was to electronically fool the engine into thinking the swirl motor was still functioning with a $1.39 resistor or actually replace the swirl motor @ $4563.00 labor & parts charge). That engine was designed to go 1,000,000 miles before a rebuild, the transmission was rated for 500,000 miles. Superlift made a 4" suspension kit for it(designed by AEV-conversions), and the rest of the drivetrain was quite stout. As previously mentioned, the Quadra-Drive II with the ELSD rear AND front diffs is the winning choice, but the Qaudratrac was no slouch either. Interior space was small by todays standards, but works ok for 2 adults, a kid and a dog.

In an interesting twist, the very same 2007 WK that started this whole thing is back up for sale at the very same dealer for the very same price. When I asked why the car was returned after 45 days, the said the purchaser was really undecided when he purchased it, and ended up trading it for a 2010 Edge instead.

Currently there are 4 WK CRDs within 300 miles:
2007 Limited 100K miles $12k Clean CarFax 3 owners (original WK I was interested in)
2008 Laredo 190k miles $10k at another dealership within 20 miles of the above Clean CarFax 2 owners
2007 Limited 190k miles this is the one thats already lifted 4", offroad bumper, winch, but they cut off the cat and there's a check engine light. Clean CarFax was asking $10K three months ago, but never sold. Now they are very flexible. Other side of the state from the first 2, only 6 hr round trip from me though (14hrs for the first two) 1 owner
2008 Limited 88k miles $16K closest to me at 1.5hr round trip. Not trying to spend that kind of dough though. 1 0wner

I'm most intrigued by the modified one since it already has everything done to it that I'd do. I'd have to get rid of the horrible "off to the mall" wheels that are on it now stat. I wonder of GDE has a solution for the removed cat? Having a hrad time getting an actual number from them right now; 'flexible' is not really a price.

**EDIT: seller just priced the vehicle at $6,900 as-is**

I have a high mileage WK CRD that I bought used from a shady used-car dealer a couple years ago. The previous owner didn't take good care of it, but the price was right and I planned to use it for heavy off-roading. After +50,000 kilometers, many of those in the Canadian Rockies, I can say that I have never had a problem with the CRD. As per other members' comments, the WK CRD engine and transmission are solid and reliable as long as you properly service them. The exception are the CRD's swirl motor flaw that needs to be addressed (I use an Eco Tune) and the risk of the 4lo not working after performing the recall. If you are intrigued by the WK CRD, and you find a clean one (with working 4lo) at a price that works for you (I recommend getting a tune), go for it. I think you wont regret it.

Thanks for that. I was a fan of my KJ CRD and I know this is a much better vehicle. The $6900 one is a single owner in his 50s. When I asked for service records I got the number of the shop that serviced it since new. When I pulled a CarFax, the service records matched the same shop do at least I know they're not BSing me.
They claim that the turbo has been rebuilt and the ball joints replaced in the front end. I'm not sure why the turbo had to be rebuilt.

OK, the 2007 modded has sold after being on the market for months
The 2008 Laredo has sold
The 2007 Limited that started this thread is still for sale $12K
the 2008 Overland is still available. $16K

They're both more than I wanted to spend, but I may drive up to see the 2007 (7 hrs).

I just read last night that the GM 2.8L Diesel was in the little jeep sold for a yr or two in North America. Is that really true?
I was surprised to read that.
