Hi Bio, hi all,

....LOOOOOONG time since we heard ANYTHING about the Terraliner!!

How about a little update?

Just so, stumbled on some vids about the KAMAZ Typhoon - (I have NO idea if these are already in this thread - somewhere...?!!)

Looks like this machine has a lot of the things you considered one time or the other:

- Seems to have air suspension (and can be manipulated accordingly)
- Independent Suspension
- 3 axles with 2 steering - and the middle axle quite close to the center of the vehicle (not exactly in the middle but quite close), avoids a lot of the pushing of 2 straight drive axles, but actually helps to pull the truck around on slippery ground!!
- Seems to be a rigid space-frame
- Driver cabin seems to be separately air suspended, but there is still a walk-through door from the cargo/ops area....
- The thing also seems rather quick on dirt and rough terrain!
- The Typhoon seems to rely on a rather narrow frame - I suppose the body is taking care of the "space frame"-action.....

Nice machine!!

....at 2:45 you see the frames.....at 2:50 you get a good glance at the IS!
[My Russian sucks ....., but some of you might be able to enjoy the video beyond the visuals! :)]

.....at 1.31 - automatic trans, but you still get to select EVERY gear if you care for....later some good IS action!

Cheers all!

Great Post thjakits !
Exactly as we love it for the Terraliner.
Just one remark: The wind screen has to be a lot bigger :wings:

I was thinking about this chosen axle position on the KAMAZ Typhoon; What would have been their motivation to go for
2 steered front axles and 1 pushing in the back. On one of the videos you can see spinning the reer axle in the snow....

I wonder if the truck was not loaded in the video - with the weight of the front cab and engine on the front two axles it might even "unload" the rear axle more - sort of like a teeter-totter with the fulcrum being the center axle.

Tatra did a lot of trucks with the two front axles steering and then a space and just one rear axle (6x6) - I think it gives better directional control in loose / messy conditions such as mud/snow or loose dirt compared to the more traditional approach of a single front steering axle and two drive axles in the rear.

The reason may be weight distribution on the axles, because the vehicle is very heavy at the front (engine, armor, ...) compared to the rear.

This is similar with most campers and is compensated with a long overhang at the back. For an off-road vehicle that is not that easy.

For BT I had to plan the weight distribution very careful to get an even distribution of 6 t (metric) on each axle.

A friend of mine cut the rear axle form his KAT 8x8 to build a rally vehicle. Compared to a regular 6x6 it can go very tight turns on loose ground because traction follows the steering wheel. The normal 6x6 wants always to go straight,e specially because there is no differential between both rear axles.

Lots of the twin steer Tatra's were actually used as prime movers in civilian service. Weight distribution isn't that much of an issue, nor is armor an issue with them. They're basically traction engines for heavy loads in potentially poor traction. Better turning radius to move through urban areas, etc. I can't recall seeing any that were military - the only ones I've seen were the 4x4, standard config 6x6, and the 8x8 versions.

Kamaz Typhoon!!

Greetings Thjaktis, and also hello to everyone else…..:coffeedrink:

Great post, and wonderful videos of what an “integrated-looking” 6x6 with plenty of power to spare might look like in action.

Although the Kamaz Typhoon is miles removed from the specified parameters of the TerraLiner, the Typhoon is still very "suggestive", as the Italians would say. Sure, it's a military vehicle and not civilian; it weighs a ton because it's loaded with armor; as campo has already suggested, the front windows are much too small (more about that in a later series of posts....:)); and the Typhoon is too short, shorter than the TerraLiner by at least 1 - 2 m. But the Typhoon's axle configuration is very interesting, and deserves consideration at length.

Many thanks for posting about this vehicle; as you can see, you've "hit a nerve"......:REOutArchery02:

Here are your videos again, plus a few more, including some about the “Ural Typhoon”. But this time the videos are embedded, because they're more "fun" that way, and because they become easier to flip through, remember, refer to, etc. when one can see their opening images…..

The first three videos are by far the most descriptive and explanatory. In effect, they are mini-documentaries, so if you can understand Russian, enjoy!

The fourth video has some great music, and shows the Typhoon negotiating spring and/or fall countryside.

The fifth video is in many ways the most complete, and has lots of footage of the Typhoon driving through snow. At one point, exactly 6 minutes and 20 seconds into the video, it demonstrates the Typhoon's special ability to do what is in effect a "bootleg turn", in which the rear end of the vehicle fishtails to help spin the whole thing around. It shows the Typhoon fishtailing in slow motion.....:sombrero:

These are videos of the Typhoon cutting some very tight turns in the snow, demonstrating its turning radius. Some of theme are repeats, but that way if one link goes down over the coming year, the other one might still be running:

If you have plenty of patience, or an excellent broadband connection, or both, also see http://vbox7.com/play:ff7dce6529 , http://vbox7.com/play:590cb3f251 , http://vbox7.com/play:1794295557 , http://vbox7.com/play:fa7fccc5b9 , and http://vbox7.com/play:81c3bb0160 . These are excellent short clips of the Typhoon doing various kinds of turns in the snow, and as near as I can tell, some of the material is not yet available on YouTube. But these clips are resident on a Bulgarian entertainment-sharing websties called vbox7 -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VBOX7 . And let's just say that vbox7 is not fast.

And below are videos of the “Ural Typhoon”., which in many ways seems to resemble the American MTVR, often discussed in this thread. For instance, see posts #330 to #332, on pages 33 and 34 (standard ExPo pagination), at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page33 and http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...pedition-RV-w-Rigid-Torsion-Free-Frame/page34 .

The first video is in English:

The Typhoon is in effect Russia's version of an MRAP, a “Mine Resistant Ambush Protected” vehicle – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAP , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamaz_Typhoon , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ural_Typhoon , https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.436965789775627.1073741836.100003866294029&type=3 , and http://www.deagel.com/Tactical-Vehicles/Kamaz-63968_a002964002.aspx .

Understood as such, the Typhoon is not actually a full-blown armored personnel carrier comparable to the American "Stryker", the German "Boxer", the Swiss-made "Piranha V", or the now-cancelled "GCV".

For a good list of the range of contemporary armored personnel carriers, complete with images, see http://www.military-today.com/apc/top_10_armored_personnel_carriers.htm . Or check out the following videos:

1. Classifying the Kamaz Typhoon: it's not "really" a combat-capable Armored Personnel Carrier

*********************************************

For the sake of comparison to the Typhoon, here are some images and videos of the recently introduced "Piranha V" armored personnel carrier -- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piranha_V , http://www.gdels.com/principal/index.asp , http://www.gdels.com/products/wheeled_4.asp?id=4 , http://www.gdels.com/products/pc5_1_gallery.asp?n=1 , http://www.gdels.com/brochures/piranha_5_eng.pdf , http://www.generaldynamics.uk.com/solutions-and-capabilities/fres-and-armoured-fighting-vehicles , http://www.army-technology.com/projects/piranhav/ , and http://www.military-today.com/apc/mowag_piranha_v.htm :
